IRP -International Registration Plan is the registration required for vehicles over 26,000 pounds that cross state lines. Also known as Apportioned Plates and Prorate Account. IFTA is the fuel tax decals and license for the same vehicles.
I just recently purchased my 1st truck and I'm trying to make sure I have everything lined up as I'm turning in my company truck this week and will begin orientation with a new company next Monday 08/12 as an O/O. The new company I will be leasing to offered their plates to me at $50/week but told me if I had the money I would come out cheaper purchasing my own plates. So I got to looking to see what exactly I will need and that's where my question comes in. I have my 2290 that I'm taking to the IRS to file and get a receipt. While doing research on purchasing base plates in Georgia I keep running across things that talk about the IRP for Apportioned Plates. So my question is do I need to setup an IRP account or does the company I'm leasing to already have this. Is this for if I'm running under my own authority (which I'm not). Also I was told the company will give me the IFTA stickers in orientation. The company I'm leasing to is based in Tennessee so is it normal for the IFTA stickers to not match the state the plates are from since I will have Georgia plates? Sorry if this comes as a dumb question.. I'm just trying to make sure I get everything done and filed and purchased before orientation gets here. Thanks in advance!!

Thanks baha.... So I should be able to just go to tag office and get a temporary tag to get me to orientation with the truck then once I'm leased on then return to tag commissioner and apply for my plates. Yes that new tax was a killer when I went to have title transferred into my name!! Every time I turn around I'm paying for some sort of tax for something!!
Lilbit Thanks this. -
If they supply your tag you will pay $2600 per year. But it is there tag. You leave them, you will not have a tag. See how much a tag will cost you at home. Might be cheaper or about the same price. And your piece of mind of knowing it is yours is worth something.
Not a major issue to set up IRP account and get the correct tag. You can have IRP account and still be leased on and operating under someone else DOT Authority. Call your IRP office to see about the cost. And they can also get you the most up to date info on what you will need. Often government websites are not updated.
The first time we had to do IRP and get Apportioned Plates it was freaky and did not make any sence. Lots of the stuff seems silly, but most of the employees are helpful if you act like you are trying to do as they ask.
And yes you can have tags in one state and IFTA stickers in another.cab29 and Whitey14243 Thank this. -

The Georgia Trucking Portal has the answers.
Their office is not in Hapeville any more. It's on Welcome-All Rd off Camp Creek Pkwy. Since about a year ago.
Use this checklist to figure out what forms to fill out and bring along. I linked it because they made it really hard to find.
You already know about the 2290. Bring your stamped receipt. You pay ad valorem tax on your truck at your county tag office. They will give you a receipt for that, but the IRP office will see it paid when they check your vin. I like bringing the paper along just in case.
A copy of your lease, current insurance certificate, and title should be what you need. If you're missing anything, the ladies at the IRP office are pretty helpful. Just don't go the last day of the month. Everyone in the state who waited till the last minute to renew will be in line ahead of you LOL.
The good news is that the renewal is easier. Two months before you expire, they mail you an application package. Complete it and mail it in and they return an invoice. One of these days they'll move to the 21st century and get that process online.BigBadBill Thanks this. -
And GA is a state that requires that you have a personal DOT number. It is personal and not big deal but you need to go the the FMCSA site and get one. I don't believe that it costs anything but they do have you enter a credit card as a verification process. Should take less than 5-mins and you will have it.

If you decide to obtain your own IRP plates, make sure that you maintain mileage records. Too many times, owner operators that obtain their own plate but IFTA under the company do not maintain the mileage records required for an audit. Each quarter you will need to have quarterly summaries of the miles AND the supporting documenation, such as trip sheets which contain routes of travel. When I audited, many times owner operators would not have the supporting documentation and had moved to another company. The previous company they worked for during the mileage reporting period would not provide the records. A few rare occasions the company provided mileage summaries that were an average for all vehicles at the company which had nothing to do with the required mileage records required by IRP. IRP penalties can be harsh for lack of records.
