Iowa Road Conditions Deteriorating Rapidly

Too many roads that are listed as Travel Not Advised, and we know Iowa doesn't close roads, so here's the link. If you are headed to Des Moines, you might look at alternate routes, as it is really bad there. Hubby decided to pull off at Wallcott and not even try it.

Additional Iowa roads become blocked by snow drifts

AMES, Iowa - Jan. 7, 2010; 11 a.m. update - Travel is presently not advised in central, south central, parts of north central, and the western half of Iowa because of very treacherous road conditions and limited visibility. The Iowa State Patrol has issued a tow ban for the affected areas.

The “No Travel” advisory includes all of Interstate 29, I-235 and I-680, and portions of I-35 and I-80.

Impassable roads
Ÿ U.S. 6 from Iowa 48 (Cass County) to I-80 (Pottawattamie County)

Roads reduced to one lane
Ÿ U.S. 6 from Iowa 48 to Atlantic
Ÿ U.S. 275 from Hamburg to U.S. 34
Ÿ Iowa 3 from Iowa 60 (Le Mars) west to Iowa 12 (Akron/South Dakota border)
Ÿ Iowa 25 in Guthrie County from I-80 north three miles
Ÿ Iowa 83 from U.S. 59 (Avoca) east to Atlantic
Ÿ Iowa 173 from Iowa 83 north to Iowa 44 (Kimballton)

Alerts concerning bordering states
Ÿ Minnesota - The Minnesota DOT and State Patrol have closed Interstate 90 and all highways in Cottonwood, Jackson, Nobles, and Rock counties in southwest Minnesota. They will remain closed until further notice. It is illegal to travel in Minnesota on a closed roadway; motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and given up to 90 days jail time. If a traveler needs to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties apply.
Ÿ Nebraska - I-80 is snow and ice covered; U.S. 34 at Plattsmouth is reduced to one lane; Nebraska City area highways (Nebraska 2) is snow and ice covered
Ÿ South Dakota - No travel is advised on I-29 from Iowa into South Dakota

Travelers are urged to keep in mind that rural county roads are also vulnerable to becoming blocked by drifts, especially in areas of the state that have had significant snowfall over the last few weeks.

Yeah, mine made it as far as Des Moines this morning and called it quits. Not worth it. No one needs to be a hero here, the freight can wait.
