I'm trying to understand what I need to get my truck setup. I know there are other threads on this but some of them are old I don't know if there is newer or better information.
The first thing is that in this cold weather I'm thinking about buying an inverter generator and using a house space heater. As long as the generator can handle it is there any reason to not do that?
I'll have to check the wattage but I figured in the summer time I could run a portable air conditioner with the inverter generator.
The next thing is I'd like to get set up with a refrigerator a coffee maker probably a small microwave and maybe an instapot or hot plate.
Can all of that run off of an inverter without killing my batteries? What size inverter would work for that?
Is there anything needed beyond an inverter and the right wiring?
Trying to figure out where to start.
Inverters and generators... Need info

It will run a stand up ac unit, fir about 7.5 hours.
Yes I can make coffee with just the batteries and the harbor freight inverter I have. But I normally run the truck whem i make Coffee or use the microwave.
I would get a non inverter generator with 3500 watts. It would run probably 14 hours running an AC. Rather than 7 or 8. I got the small one, since it fit in between the hoses when I pulled tanker. But the small one is light. 60 pounds with fuel.

staceydude and Dino soar Thank this. -
I have a 2,500 watt pure sine wave inverter. I use welding cable to supply it with power from the batteries with a 200 amp fuse and a cut off switch.
I run a small apartment type refrigerator with it which draws a small amount of power. Anytime I use it for larger loads, coffee maker, microwave, convection cook top, I always have the engine running. Large watt loads can draw up to 150 amps off the batteries.
Friends had 4500 watt generator, they cooked, ran an electric heater and had the engine block heater plugged into it. Worked fine.Farmerbob1 and Dino soar Thank this. -
117 volts x amp= watts. so ac's have start up amps and running amps. so anything you buy. look for amps.
Dino soar Thanks this. -
The reason I ask is because I have a space heater from Home Depot that cost about $112 and it's great it would be perfect for the truck.77fib77 Thanks this. -
I have a 5500/ 6500 generator I could probably Mount but that thing is big and it will use more fuel than an inverter generator.
Probably Overkill but I do already own it... -
The exhaust, I got into the habit of putting the generator by the landing gear and chaining it to the landing gear. More for my neighbor than my self. I have seen people run an exhaust line to the ground at the back of the tractor.Last edited: Feb 18, 2021

If it did not smell and stink out other drivers that's a great idea to chain it up to the landing gear. I would rather do that and take it in and out of the truck than have to permanently Mount one and rig up the exhaust and all of that.
I don't know though if I could find one to run 10 or 12 hours putting out 1500 watts. You can't carry gasoline on the truck with you.
Unless I bought two and swap them out... -
