I have a 400 watt inverter now that I use to power my printer and occasionally my laptop..no problems there.

My problem is I got a small Kurig coffee maker I want to be able to use. The 400w inverter won't power it (blew a 20 amp fuse).
Question is..will a PD-750 ( yellow inverters sold at Pilot/ FJ) watt inverter do the job..The coffee maker specs say 425 watts.

Unfortunately I can't install a direct connect inverter so it has to be a plug in type inverter.

I was told if I connected a inverter directly that I'd void the truck warranty. Having the Volvo dealer install one may be an expensive option if I can get the boss to agree...which I highly doubt he would even if I paid the bill.

Getting real tired of nasty truck stop coffee :(

It's not the inverter. It's the 20 Amp circuit that your lighter socket runs on. It doesn't matter if you put a bigger inverter on that 20 Amp circuit because as soon as you hit it with 425 watts of load it's going to pop the fuse.

Watts "divided by" the truck battery voltage = the AMPS that it will draw.

Most truck batteries produce 13-14 volts.

For example: 425 Watts divided by 13 volts = 32.7 AMPS of draw when the coffee maker is in its fully heating stage. You may get it to work if you had a 30 AMP lighter socket and fuse. But I don't know if any truck models come wired with a 30A lighter circuit. Perhaps someone else here can confirm that part for "trivia" sake.

But the bottom line is that anything over about 350 Watts (constant) will blow a typical truck lighter circuit fuse in short order. Technically you could plug a 2000 Watt inverter into a lighter socket, but as soon as the "load" went over 300 - 400 watts it will still blow the circuit panel fuse.

If I remember right that 750w inverter comes with cables with alligator clips. If you open the hood you should find a terminal block eith heavy gauge red and black wires. Hook up the inverter and put it inside the truck on the floor so you can plug in your coffee maker.

My coffee maker used to draw 850 watts during it's peek pull making coffee...it was a 110 volt Mr. Coffee 4 cup electric coffee maker.
So I required a 1000 watt inverter hard wired or it would just whistle.

Also had a boss that didn't want an inverter hard wired, so he bought me one of them 12 volt (cigarette lighter) coffee makers...and that thing took so long to brew coffee, it was literally luke warm (at best) by the time it brewed 2 cups.

A21CAV hit the nail on the head.Alligator clips are your friend(in your situ).Anything w/a heating element is a watt-drawer-not for plug in.

I would also like to point out how thin the wires are that go to the lighter. You may be able to plug in a larger fuse, but those little wires will only handle so much.

I'm in the process of chasing a couple electrical gremlins and decided to run heavier wires to the plug while I have the dash pulled apart.

We aren't just lighting cigarettes anymore. Those plugs need to be beefed up for modern use.

You need 1500 minimum for a keurig for the initial start up and 200 to 400 continuous.

A good work around until you can get the size inverter you need and installed correctly is....
You can get yourself a good thermos like a Stanley and a coffee filter holder from melitta and some #4 cone filters.
Pre heat the thermos a few minutes then refill with hot water right off the truck stop coffee pot it's usually the Orange lever.
It will still be steaming hot when you get up, pop a filter in the holder add your coffee set it on top of your cup and slowly pour the water over your favorite grounds.
You'll have to experiment till you get it like you want , depends on how course of ground but with pre ground off the shelf 3 rounded teaspoons is good for about a 12 oz cup.
Agian You'll have to a little experimenting.
CAUTION: that canned garbage like Folgers and the rest of' am don't work well with a POUR OVER. Get ya some Starbucks or Peets or whatever of the better coffees.
Those melitta filter holders can be found at lot of grocery stores or you can just order on line. Wal mart and target I haven't seen them in the shelfs in a long time.
I know Albertsons carries them in store.
By the this was how I made my coffee for yrs before I had an inverter.

I had a truck a few years ago that had battery studs
Right behind the drivers seat, with plastic caps on them.
I think it was a Volvo.
You could connect your power inverter from the
    Inside of your truck.
Took me a few months to even realize what they were
    There for.
You might have them on your Volvo.
