I'll be starting up with local side-dump work this year and will hopefully expand into some flatbed work hauling machinery. I'm getting everything together, making a list, and checking it twice. One thing I'm trying very hard not to overlook is the insurance.

My question is, who does everyone use for insurance? I've read in several places that Progressive is the only one that will insure an O/O and all the stuff that comes with it. I kind of find that a little hard to believe. Yet a Google search doesn't seem to yield very many options either, so then again...

I have all my personal things covered by State Farm and already got a "no" from them in regards to this. My agent referred me to another insurance agency that seems to just broker from national companies (Progressive being one of them). In my mind, why pay a middle man? What do you guys think?

I had no choice but to go with Progressive when I started. If it ends up as your only choice then after two years you will have more options.
I just switched to GEICO Marine and they were $27k cheaper than Progressive..give GEICO a call.

I think a lot has to do with what state you're in.

I always forget that part. I'm in Nebraska, where the only thing higher than the taxes is the insurance...

Geico Marine covers your truck? I would've never guess that one in a hundred years. Good to know, though!

Endless threads on this topic. New entrants are pretty much stuck with Progressive for the first two years. Better have a couple different agents get you some quotes before getting too far ahead of yourself. Be ready for some sticker shock.

Yep, for the truck. Dealt with an agent that only does trucking insurance and that’s what he came up with.
Just switched our personal vehicle to Geico from Progressive today. Ended up being $800 cheaper for same coverage.

Got a quote from them on homeowners insurance also but they’re about $2k more than Progressive.

That just blows my mind that it's the only option. Not saying I don't believe what everyone is saying, it's just mind boggling. They pretty much get to name their price then, I imagine.

If you plan to just run local in NE you may have more options, but for interstate authority there aren’t many that will touch new carriers.

I know right, but think about it this way. When you get your first car insurance policy you're considered a new driver and there's only one place that will write a policy for new driver usually. Business policies are treated the same way. Prices are mirrored as well.

Yeah, that makes sense well enough, I suppose. In terms of starting as an o/o, I hope they take things into accounts like number of years with a CDL, driving record, safety record, number of years in the industry as a company driver, etc, etc. Maybe they do or maybe they don't. Either way, looks like I'll be paying my dues (so to speak) on that end for a while.
