Hello folks. I'm about to shop for insurance since it's due for renewal in a month. I'm on the Progressive website and was about half-way through when confusion set in. It asked what type of filings I need and gave me 3 choices:

    1- Federal
    2- MCS 90
    3- State

I wasn't sure which one to put. I don't want to contact my agent because she's with Great West and might get pissed that I'm checking out Progressive. Great West DID lower my insurance to about $17,500 for the next year (my 3rd year), so I'm pretty happy about that. But Progressive offers that SmartHaul program that might be to my advantage since I probably won't do more than 50,000 miles this year. Progressive also factors in the zip where I garage the truck. If the savings are negligible I'll probably stay with Great West since they're the better company. When I was booking loads last year, some brokers actually said to me, "What insurance do you have? You don't have Progressive do you?" So that kind of told me that some brokers view Progressive as taboo.

    Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks Dave. So my insurance was lowered by $4500. It was $22,029 last year, and this year it will be $17,500. But I have my truck valued at $40,000, which is unrealistic for a 2009 Columbia. I just spoke to my agent and she said that I'm overpaying for nothing. So if I lower the truck value to $25,000, my premiums will go down another $1000. But I don't think the book value on my truck is even $25,000. I went on Ritchie Brothers the other day because I was thinking of buying a 2019 Cascadia 126. They were popping off at less than $25,000 and so were the Volvos! I'm going to price my truck right now to see what the book value is. But I think I'm going to stay with Great West. My policy includes towing, medical, breakdown and even $50,000 in unowned trailer coverage. I might actually do away with the unowned trailer because I bought a reefer. So we'll see. It might be worth it to keep it in case I do power-only work.

    Thanks for the help though.

Drop this coverage now and add it when you need it. Save some money. Nothing but a key stroke.

So you're saying that whenever I need it, I can just call and get coverage for that particular haul?

Yes, I have great west also. I change my cargo from 100,000 to 200,000 4 times (3 week duration) a year, to satisfy a customer I have. I run about 12 weeks a year with higher coverage just for him. In between I lower coverage.

Some changes depend on your agent.

Your agent shouldn't get pissed about this, she should shop for you for the best all around rates and coverage. That's their job. And they understand all the filings, etc. Like you, I like to do my own research too, but she probably wouldn't get mad. She might work harder for you if she knows it's important to you.

I am with Progressive as well because that's what my agent gets me the best all around coverage and rate on, so far. I did swap to a different company one year, wasn't Great West but I'm going to ask about them this year because I've heard lots of good things. I have also had a couple of brokers question my coverage with Progressive because of 'unpaid claims' but I don't know what that's about just yet. I plan to ask my agent about that next time I talk to her. One broker recently told me flat out they couldn't use me because of Progressive's unpaid claims.

Pretty crazy. My understanding has always been that Progressive insurers more truckers than any other insurer. And Progressive had no problem paying my multi-thousand dollar claim this past year for vandalism when I had 13 tires slashed.

    Rideandrepair and gekko1323 Thank this.

I did call my agent yesterday and asked about Progressive because she's an agent for them also. She told me that Progressive has raised their rates THREE times in the last 12 months. She also remarked that the $4500 reduction in my rate after just two years is pretty rare. She said that if I stay claim-free again, next year I can expect another $2500 or so reduction.

I have to admit, I have no complaints about Great West. I had to use their tow coverage TWICE my first year, and both times they answered the phone immediately, the agent spoke real English, and the tow trucks showed up within the hour. One of the tows was about 140 miles from Barstow to my yard in Vegas when my clutch linkage busted at the Blue Beacon in Barstow. The manager there went coo-coo for coco puffs because my truck was blocking the entrance to one of their bays! That was funny. That tow alone probably would have been over $3000, maybe more. With Great West, I only had to pay $250. If not for these two claims, my premiums would have probably been even lower.

Where did you get your tires slashed? Was it in Georgia like the others?
