Our renewal is coming up soon. I want to check other places than Progressive. How much trouble is it if you change your insurance? Where do you need to send updates, DOT, etc., and what forms need to be filled out to be compliant? Every insurance most likely will have their own BOC-3 with agents filled out. And of course, you will need to send FORM BMC-91 to DOT? What other places? Most likely insurance agents will know where to send the updates. I just want to know how long does the process take? Does it halt your business in any way while the updates are being sent out?
I'm not worried about Brokers. I know I will need to resend new info to them. I'm more concerned about DOT, and other places to keep all the permits active.

Changing insurance at a renewal is a natural thing - it has to be done before the current one expires of course, I'd give it at least 2 or 3 weeks. Many people shop around to find a better deal. I changed mine after the 1st year to save money. I changed the agent too. I may do it again in future.
Beaver9 Thanks this. -
Starting to shop even as much as 60 days prior to renewal is normal. Even preferred.
Rushing only puts you at a disadvantage strategically in regards to negotiating a better deal.maconhadalata and TallJoe Thank this. -
Thy increased mine by $300 per year without me giving them any reason. They said that that's overall market reaction to the last year's events and too many cancelations during pandemic when the business was slow. They would not give me a renewal quote earlier than 2 weeks prior to the expiration point, so I did not want to mess around with it at that short time left nor that I was particularly surprised by the fact either. I dislike insurance changes, so unless someone had given me a quote by at least $500-1000 less from where I am now, I would have not considered it anyway.
I guess at $7780 for Auto Liability, General Liability and Cargo for A++ rated insurance I should not complain but next time I will get some actual quotes from other insurance carriers.Midwest Trucker, Beaver9 and 86scotty Thank this. -
First year with Progressive for me was $15k, second year my agent got me a better deal all around with Northland, third year back to Progressive and down to $7800 (paid in full, which saved about $1500).
I'm not expecting it to get any cheaper.TallJoe Thanks this. -

My first year was around 21K. Then I lowered the radius getting it down to 19K that year per suggestion since I never go for longer trips. Though my agent never suggested it.
For this year, I got a quote for $16,500 from Progressive. It's still pretty high for my second year. In five months, I will be a CDL driver for five years. My credit score went up, somewhere around 750 now or close to it. Hopefully, Northland will take the second year authority drivers.
I would pay in full to save $2,000 but it is a bit much to pay in full. I still have loans to pay off which I hope to get rid off this year. I won't be able to put $14,500 out like that. I need to leave some money if unexpected maintenance comes up.Last edited: Jan 10, 2021
