I would recommend a cobalt drill bit
Or start there then use a step cobalt drill bit. -
3/4" drill bit

Good drill bits and cutting fluid. For bigger holes I like to pilot drill the holes with a 1/4" bit and then either follow up with larger bits, or just ram a good HSS tapered reamer on a drill through the pilot hole.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
You're going to have to start with a small bit and then work your way up. It's not going to be easy with a hand drill going that big, I would recommend a 3/4 hole saw.

Hopefully where you are drilling these holes isn't structural!

If you are drilling in steel, get a magnetic base drill and hole-saw, layout/center punch it first to locate,
Then use a bigger center punch and whack it real good, to give pilot somewhere to settle into.
Spin the chuck backwards by hand first, to make sure drill tip is centered in punch mark.
Now verify location of drill tip in this crater, flip on the magnet, and drill away.
Try the size and fit first on some junk steel. That's the easiest way; after several it's nothing.
I did this up the sides of my Freightliner Rollback bed, thru 6X6X1/4" steel angle, every 2 feet.Last edited: Mar 11, 2018

I drilled over 50 holes with this one hole saw some years back. Mine were 2 1/4 holes though...
