kinda like a few years ago when everybody had their equipment registered in oklahoma and illinois .
Oldironfan Thanks this. -
Different states allow out-of-state carriers to license equipment in their state. States have different costs and requirements and registration periods, so carriers weigh the options and go with the one that makes financial and accounting sense for them. And usually it comes down to costs, and all carriers are savvy at cutting costs.

Knight does it out of indy, I asked once and don't know if they guy was just talking out his rear but I was told it had to do with Tax's and fee's. Also the plates are Perm when we retire a truck we transfer that plate to a new truck that just got put in service.
Oldironfan Thanks this. -
A friend of mine has a big diesel pusher motor home that lives in Indiana but has Montana plates on it????

You need tags for a trailer?
I think I need to do some more research . . . -
At our last safety meeting we had an officer from the FDOT come and talk to us. Mainly showing us what he looks for during a roadside inspection.
One question that came up was about tags, he told us when he puts it in his system in the computer, several states come back within seconds. Florida, Georgia, north Carolina, and a few others will pop right up. When it comes to Oklahoma and Maine, he said those are the two that you send a request for the tag info and it could take hours to get anything back. He said he doesn't usually bother with pulling over some guys who have clean, well taken care of trucks if they're registered in those states.
Said that's why a lot of the Dolly's for those containers in the Jax port are registered in maine lol.
Its most likely for financial reasons but it could have other pros tookenn2632, Oldironfan, stwik and 3 others Thank this.
