In your opinion which is the best sounding diesel engine?

1693, 425, Cat, from the old days. 3406A second. A 12.7 Detroit and a good small cam Cummins are tied for third.

 

1693 Cat gotta love that guy inside the motor with a ballpen hammer randomly hitting it. A 3408 Cat sounds sweet. Any 2 stroke Detroit sounds good (238, 318, 8V92)

 

The 1693 when idling is possibly the best sounding motor ever made. The V series Detroit were great sounding too. Especially with gutted mufflers. An old V-8 Mack don't sound bad either.

 

My C-15 cat sounds like a beast when it's under a pull. Trouble is...It's not a beast. The twin turbos sound good. It just don't have the bite to back up the bark.

That is easy enough to fix.

As already said, cant beat a 1693. Idiling or pulling, had a sound all its own....

 

I have not had much contact with American Motors ,but as far as Europe's old engines sound much better ... Ecology ruined everything ....There is nothing happier than you hear the engine without any eco-standards with two valves per cylinder and a mechanical pump.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E33RBAaf7xU&feature=related -----this is unterflur ( that is engine which is not under the cab.....it is next to the chassis between the axles on right side ,while part of the engine under the chassis,engine is in the supine position,horizontally ......and it is really confortable to drive and quiet there is no engine tunel in cab .....and an empty truck has a good weight distribution .....but you have to be careful.... that would not have stuck with the engine on ground....


edit: also this is scania ds10 engine from ~1961 that engine is from 1951-53
