Hi, i am looking for an advise on importing a used semi tractor from canada. I am buying it from my close friend. So it won't be through dealer. I wonder if i have to pay excise duty on the border, if yes then how much it would be for a commercial tractor?
Also FET (federal excise tax). Will i have to pay F.E.T on current price i will buy it for or the original price of truck ? Thanks

Here's a good place to start. Remember, there is potentially a 25% import tax (on value).

I flew up to Edmonton to pick it up, and the exporter that worked with the seller told me that they were putting vehicles in 30 day limbo at border crossings, but I might have the best chance crossing at Saskatchewan, but I couldn't because I didn't have enough fuel, so I crossed into Montana.
I paid $8.50 import fee and they stamped the EPA form and the DOT form.
You should have to pay FET, but that can be paid later, even on your income tax form. The amount is based on how much you paid, not the original price.dustinbrock, bigguns, simongrewal and 2 others Thank this. -
Which begs the question......If a vehicle is manufactured in the U.S. and then transported to Canada to be sold at a Canadian dealer and then is sold to a customer and said customer sells it 3 yrs later to a U.S. resident who then drives it back to the U.S. (where it was originally manufactured), should there be an import fee ?
