I'm in SoCal, should I take the "easy" route of one of the megas with "free" CDL in Fontana? Or?

    Seeking advice.

I'm in Orange County, CA, local residency and regular DL. Seems a few mega companies have CDL training based in Fontana CA, 50-60 miles from me.

Is that logistically easier, then? Does that mean I can skip on the oft-described ritual Greyhound bull and just take my car there?

Will it then be ok to use my car to stow my stuff, for local shopping or a bit of privacy, or a quick run home if I have the time or need something? Or is that frowned upon?

Also, as I understand it, it'd be preferable to later switch residency to a no-tax state like Texas once I get into OTR, will getting a CDL in California make that significantly more complicated?

If I got a CDL from a Texas outfit instead and went OTR from there, would doing that make me "Texan" for tax purposes automatically? Or would I still need to jump through a similar amount of hoops to "divorce" myself from the not-so-great state of California anyway?

    WWYD? Please advise

PS currently single, plan was to dump my stuff in my mom's garage in SoCal, get some OTR experience, then eventually settle down in Texas and get some port or oil related trucking job there

To get a TX CDL you basically need to live in TX or have a TX address. The local training with a mega mean you have job when finished and the train you their way. You usually have sign a contract to work for then like a year. So you can't just quit unless you pay them back for the training. They also usually pay less per mile. So it not really free but it get you into driving. You can always switch later if you want.

Even when people pay for training themselves you have find a company that will hire someone new without any experience. Kinda same thing they pay less because they are taking a big risk. They may also require you go with their trainer for couple weeks.

    Yeah I know.

I mean should I shoot for a mega with training in driving distance from where I'm at, since there seem to be a couple in the next county over?

Afaik they got a CRE location and a Swift out there in Fontana CA, and I think Knight was it? maybe more too

Or find me a CDL place in Texas or some other no-income-tax state right away? Do any megas train in Texas?

Isnt it a crime to evade taxes like that? You live in California so pay your taxes. And dont vote democratic if you go to texas. We wont give up our guns so dont bother trying

GTFO of California , sounds like you might have enough sense to pack up. Just about everyone I meet from there has sun damage to their brain. And once you start living in Texas and paying for your housing etc, you'll start to see the real side of America. The republican side, you went out and improved your living situation.

Superior Carriers has a very busy terminal in Pasadena, TX. You can get your license and transfer it easily to Texas, just have to prove residency. I would get started with school and contact Superior while you’re in school. Once you finish, head on out to Texas & leave California in the rear view mirror. I’m a California refugee myself, took my guns and my freedom & moved to Florida. Superior hired me fresh out of school, much better option than going with a mega but I understand not everyone has the cash for CDL school. Do what you need to do to get out of California.

Why would California deserve a big cut of my pay if I start living on a truck rolling back and forth across the lower 48?

    Not really seeing the reasoning

My opinion is don't sign on to a contract for your license, for one call Dootson Truck School in El Monte in think, they will let you pay as you go, Local wise you can call Robertson Cement there office is in Corona, They are local and will train you, then put you on loads at 24 percent I believe. They will have you sign a contract if you use there school , but its local. At Dootson you can do weekend classes (or used to be able to). Personal attention working on your weak areas. Takes longer but you dont owe anyone. My wife and my mom both got there class 1 licenses thru Dootson a few years back they were great to work with back then.
You ask for opinion, You can check with Commercial Transport / Holiday Rock I'm not sire but they may have a training program.
