I have a general illinois blanket overweight permit and I always avoided tollways. Now I am getting a big job that involves a lot of heavy trucking and it would be very costly to avoid tollways for that specific location.

Most if not all loaded in question will be overweight, but NOT oversize.

My question is, how does IL tollway overweight permitting works. Do I just get one at the booth or I can get one online? Any blanket options?

    thanks

They have a decent website to look everything up.
    $35/trip under 104 gross.
    Over is $150
They have some different tandem and tridem axle weight rules that can get you bumped up under that 104 gross though. Depending on the axle spread/weights.

How do they count trips? Can I use one permit for two or three trips and not tell anyone?

    Ok WHAT.
NO pay the price for each trip needed, the freight rate should cover cost if it is a good job like you said. If not, it is not a good gig and it affects others running legal trying to make decent money.

It is my own job. Bring my forklift and take out some heavy metal pieces. It is a scrap job and only pays what I make in profit. Hence my question.

Here's an update. You only are supposed to pay at manned toll plazas. So if I drive without encountering one, I do not have to pay.

    But wait, there is more.

Overall my impression was from the beginning that the toll plaza people have no idea how to handle OS/OW permits and that I might be the only guy who gets those tollway permits.

I had another overweight piece on the tollway today (a crane). Dutifully stopped by toll plaza. The person operating it had all indication that he had no clue how to handle it. The printer was not working. spent 20 minutes on the phone with someone asking inane questions. etc I finally asked him straight out, I said, I do what is right but it looks like everyone just blows by these plazas and does not pay? Like it looks like you are not even doing this often? And he said yes, this is really the way it it, truckers pass plazas and do not pay.

So, I am expecting a firestorm from self righteous people, but I am not going to pay these overweight tolls any more.

I came through there this weekend all prepared to blow them, but instead the state routed me around and through town on the south side.
