I’m thinking of bypassing my worn out ignition switch, and putting the power to a toggle switch with a momentary starter button. Also have a switch for the accessory. There’s 3 auxiliary switches on a factory panel that aren’t being used. How’s this for any idea? Better than paying Kenworth a small fortune for a new ignition cylinder, and a decent anti theft setup. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a ‘97 W900?

A test light would tell you all you need to know to accomplish that

You better start getting used to spending money on stuff you need for that thing. A ignition cylinder is nothing in the scope of what’s coming at you. I would never buy a used truck that the ignition was all hacked up. That’s a fire waiting to happen where you will be sleeping. Especially if you think you need a working diagram to do it?

But it’s your truck, do as you please?

I can only imagine how many times in 20 years the ignition has been turned in this truck. Things wear out, and it’s too late to turn back now.

I guess I missed out on the truck that doesn’t ever have problems. Can you go ahead and show me that one?

Drop it off at a dealership to get some work done on it will be a nightmare. Mechanic will be trying to figure out how to start it for 30 minutes, just trying to run it into the shop.

My B model Cat had a factory Kysor low oil pressure-high water temp shut down system. It had a factory override toggle to start the engine. Push the toggle until oil pressure built.

As years went by fewer and fewer Pete/Cat mechanics were familiar with the system, I would get a call (we can't get your truck started)

I ended up taking a rubber band and holding the toggle in the override position every time I dropped the truck off where a mechanic had to start it.

Every now and then we have a mechanical engine get dropped off at our shop to work on. Poor young guys have no idea of a murphy gauge or a manual pull shut off. "I parked in the yard and the jakes stayed on and killed the engine??

I would buy ignition cylinder and be done with it and I am seriously a cheap #######.
Don’t know why they ever strayed away from having starter switch under throttle pedal or on the dash

    Oxbow and AModelCat Thank this.

When I get the truck back from the clutch job I’ll dig into it and make the decision which way to go.
