    Simple.

    IF MPG is, say...6.25 MPG.
IF total mileages ran in ALL states was 5000.
Total fuel burned was 800 gallons.

Let's say total jurisdiction mileages for the quarter were:
    Massachusetts 1500.
    New Hampshire 500.
    Maine 3000.

Lets' say you bought at the pumps:
    Massachusetts 250 gallons.
    New Hampshire 85 gallons.
    Maine 460 gallons.

Massachusetts 1500 miles divided by 6.25 MPG = 240 gallons used. You have receipts for 250 gallons purchased at the pumps. 250 - 240 = 10 gallon over purchase in that state. The tax rate this past quarter for Massachusetts was 0.2100 per gallon. 10 gallons times 0.2100 = $2.10 overpayment of tax to Massachusetts.

New Hampshire: 500 miles divided by 6.25 MPG = 80 gallons used. You bought 85 gallons. 5 gallon over purchase...the NH tax rate was 0.1800 so...5 gal x 0.1800 = $0.90 overpayment in your credit.

Maine: 3000 miles divided by 6.25 MPG = 480 gallons used. You purchased 460 gallons. 480 minus 460 = 20 gallon under purchase. 20 gallons times the tax rate for Maine (0.3070) = $6.14 underpayment of tax.

Total $: Credit <2.10> Massachusetts, Credit <$0.90> New Hampshire and tax-owed under purchased $6.14 for a grand total of $3.14 owed to your IFTA license jurisdiction (Massachusetts?) when you file your return. Massachusetts will dole it out according to the mileages traveled on your return for the quarter.

That's the basics. There is more. Bulk fuel storage, etc. Decals down my way don't cost anything and there is no filing fee for the application renewals each year.

Those tax rates change...the updated/current tax rates are available there where Redd told ya or here:

    http://www.iftach.org/taxmatrix3/choose_tableq2.php

That ain't so hard now is it? :)

Records for fuel purchases and mileages must be retained for 4 years down where I am...I imagine it's the same according to the other IFTA jurisdictions. Advantages? One filing location as opposed to filing a return with all the individual states like we used to have to do way back when. Also, one audit for all jurisdictions if the need arises.

One final note...I believe you can still buy trip permits if you do not have IFTA license. You could back some years ago. Check on that. IFTA will require a license application for your state...and I think Redd pointed you to that also for Massachusetts.

    Have fun...truck safe.

EDIT: Oooops! BryRy...just noticed you're running a B model 425. That MPG I used was just a figure....my favorite truck of all times was an '88 379 ext hood 425 B Model with a Schwitzer turbo on it set right teamed with a Fuller 15 speed. It ran and pulled like a molested gorilla but fuel mileage sometimes got into the very low 4's hitting the headwinds running out west. I could watch the fuel gauge drop as I pushed it (portable parking lots don't get mileage no matter what). Just a thought... :)

your the man, thanks NOW I get it. Yeah its a 350hp 3406B hay and shavings are light luckly but idk what shes going to get for mileage. So if I get a trip permit I don't need a ifta sticker? cause I"m getting trip permits anyway because I don't have aportioned plates.

Bry, like I said...check on the permit thing. Right out of my IFTA manual (which is not Massachusetts) it says: "If a carrier qualifies as an IFTA licensee (traveling in 2 or more IFTA member jurisdictions and being based in an IFTA state), he can choose not to participate in the IFTA program but trip permits must be obtained to travel through any IFTA jurisdiction." Check with Mass IFTA folks to see if that flies for you.

    Thanks.

IFTA = fuel tax, not having the states on your IRP is another trip permit...OH Yeah, you need a UCR [unified carrier registration] too...

If I recall, under $20.00 payment or credit not required to be made.
