Hey Truckers,
Im a designer at College for Creative Studies in downtown Detroit and I'm currently working on an interior semi truck design sponsored by International/Navistar Trucks. I've done some research about trucking and the aggravations and discomforts each of you have while driving but there isn't too much out there about this subject. I would appreciate any comments about anything that bothers you that you would like to improve about your trucking experience ie: dashboard arrangements, switch placement, seat comforts, sleeping area, food.. etc Your ideas/complaints may be able to be used/solved on future models of semi trucks, just put them here.
best regards,
Steve
If you could improve anything about the interior of your semi truck what would it be?

A comode would be a blessing, yet some easy way of emptying it (bag?)
The problem with the above idea is where to put it in a limited cab?
This is a world of digital outputs. Why cant we get a HUD for the gauges? Or even an LCD that allows the guages to be moved about as the driver likes? We now have touch screens that interact with the user, why not incorperate that into the display?
Seems like 3 LCD out puts would take care of your guages. Then a HUD (heads up display) for MPH, Turn signals, Turbo Sensor, Air pressure. Have these on the periphery of vision. Wasnt there some technology Cadillac had done for HUD that would see in fog?
The LCD's could act as viewers for cameras that can be used looking down the backside of the truck (have the drives in view, as well as the tandems).
Volvo supposedly had been working on second generation of cruise control. There was a sensor that would recognize if slower traffic was in front and alter the speed of the tractor. Then when traffic resumed its normal speed the cruise would do the same. Lost technology?
If there is a cb perch above the drivers head, why is it there is no power output for the cb there?
If the truck has a condo bunk? Why is it there are no seperation curtains for the bunks? Why is it only the lower bunk has controls, yet not the upper bunk? IE AC / heat / light control.Semi Truck Designer, simplyred1962 and truckerdave1970 Thank this. -
Pneumatic Clutch pedals !!!! Why do Nth American trucks still have these prehistoric clutch predals ? I see Old truckers limping & its always their left leg ! In Europe the clutch pedals are pneumatic (air powered) & the trucks i drove there getting the clutch down was easier than in my car (hydraulic) My left leg hurts like hell in DT stop start traffic.

simplyred1962 Betty Boop, One Bodacious Babe!!!
IMHO, standard fridges and micro's, with accompanying power sources. But, this is coming from the wife of a trucker who travels with(most of the time), and tries to save money by cooking HEALTHY foods on the truck, rather than being forced to eat the UNHEALTHY garbage sold at truck stops, and the places that call themselves "restaurants", in them.
Oh, and MORE STORAGE, in general, INSIDE the truck.

A beautiful sexy woman sitting in the passenger seat!
Everything else about the truck that I may dislike can be changed by the power of my own hands.agent13, wulfman75, JimDriv3r and 1 other person Thank this. -
Steve:
Move the ac vents so they don't blow on the steering wheel. Eleven hours of driving with the ac blowing on my hands is not a good thing.
Also, I'd like a potty. I doubt that'll ever be a standard thing but I'd still like one.
There is no reason a good designer can't get the dimensions of the refrigerators and 12 volt coolers and design the space for them so they'll fit. Seriously. In the International Prostar we have to remove the drawer in order to place a 12 v cooler. That's just silly.
Also wouldn't it seem logical to make the closet for hanging clothes long enough for a man's shirt?
And mesh fronts do not work nearly as well as a door on cabinets.
Placing the switch for the flashers on the top of the steering column is absurd. You need to be able to reach it. If you're driving you can't reach through the steering wheel.
Why place plugs under the bunk where a driver has to get on his or her hands and knees to use it?
If I could design the prostar I'd take the two columns of cabinets and table tops, make them cabinets floor to ceiling. Then put a pull out drawer on both sides. -
I love you!! I'd like to help you get there.
# 1--You have a limited space. Now, what you think you have--you don't because thats where all the xtra stuff equipment and systems go, i.e., nitewatch (no idling( systems go)
#2 -- For some reason all companies get the double bunk situation going-----BS!! There is not only laws about this going down the road,-----it's useless. I run team with my husband--however if I ran it with another person, the top bunk is useless and very uncomfortableagent13, Semi Truck Designer and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
Oh by the way I am a huge fan of IKEA.
#1 Rest is so important to the averagw driver. A good mattress. They sit for hours at a time. Good support is a must. (No coil mattresss)
#2 All of the manufacturers have "cubby holes". In this day and age, the truck should come with a bracket mounted for a flat screen with dvd player. There is still the cubby hole for the 13 inch box tvshortcut, Semi Truck Designer and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
#3 A microwave hook up and a coffee pot hook up would be beautiful. Right now its like you get this brand new truck and then you have to revamp it with inverters. Do the cost versus the convenience and keeping that trruck going down the road.

Now I am not saying the employer buys the appliances/tv but its easily available, including fridge hook up.
Now I have never understood the meaning of the "wardrobe" in the truck. There is a very long section in the back. Are we going to wear a prom dress or one of those coats guys wear in the westerns??? (Duster!!!)
Take a look in a double bunk truck--two guys on a layover--yeah, you'd want to keep the tiny little half assed bunk---however--options. Cabinet space, maybe a rail system with locks, you need to get back with me.
As for dash, tons of improvement needed--I swear my grand kids could design a better lay out than what we've seen.
Bathroom situation, you can figure it out, there is your sell. A lot of areas won't allow trucks. Shippers and receivers won't allow truck drivers to use their facilities. For the most part, drivers pee in bottles, and empty them in grass. Rude ones just leave urine and a bottle/jug behind. Please get back to me on personnal message--I will certainly tell you--I do drive a KW 700.Semi Truck Designer and Bengal Thank this.
