so i started school monday, took the test and got my permit today. i knew i would have trouble with the vision test so i went earlier in the week and bought glasses(#### they are high, i had no idea!) so my doc says i have 20/20 in one eye and 20/50 in the other WITHOUT glasses and 20/30 WITH GLASSES. I know the minimum is 20/40. when i looked into the vision test i could barely read the last line WITH MY GLASSES ON! My question is...what happens if you cant read 20/40 with corrective lenses? my guess is you just cant drive anymore. is there anything you can do to keep your liscense...waivers etc? i know you have to renew your liscense every two years so im worried that in a couple of years i may not be able to pass it. i have almost perfect vision in one eye and i see really well. anyone else out there have to deal with something like this. ive already searched the forums and cant find anything on this scenario. lots of questions about what is the minimum but not this. any help would be appreciated, thanks!
If you can barely read this click here! dmv vision question.

Dirtmerchant.... from one wannabe to another, why on earth would you even consider wanting to become a trucker if you can barely see to pass an DMV eye test? That's just plain crazy thinking!? Not to give you grief... but what about reading the gauges in a truck? Speedometer, tach, pyro, air, heck.... even shift pattern. Not to mention road signs, a map or a GPS or Qualcomm readout. Eye fatigue alone from constantly changing field of vision from side mirrors to what's in front of you, to blind spot convex mirrors.... not to mention night blindness ect. ect...... are you getting my drift here? I'd sure hope you consider another career choice!!! Sounds like your eyes are telling you something and you realize it, but don't want to do the responsible thing. I guess if you feel comfortable risking yours and others lives..... oh well, just my opinion though.... Hmmm

go to your eye doctor once each year. get a full exam. with corrective lenses, you will be ok...you should also ask your eye care PROFESSIONAL for the "blue card" in which he writes down the eye measurements. present that card to the DMV when you need to go and have your license renewed. NO DMV person CAN REJECT an eye care PROFESSIONAL...those "eye machines" at ANY DMV are worthless pieces of shiot.......
make sure you know for sure how many years till you need to renew the CDL. some states, its 5 years (mine).....some states 3 years, and so on. get those eyes examined just a week or two BEFORE you go to renew your license..... -
and why would he want to look at the shift pattern...??? one only "needs" to view it once, maybe on the outside twice to get to learn it, but once one drives, one DOES NOT continually LOOK at the shift pattern....is this what you think we do...?? constantly look at the shift pattern..???
this was only MY 2¢ worth......
thank you.kerosene jockey, LaBubba, papa1953 and 9 others Thank this. -
I recently went to get my license renewed and I had some problems with the vision test even with my contacts in. The DMV put a restriction on my licence saying I can not drive a cmv out of state. That doesn't effect my job because I drive a dump truck locally, but I might want to go OTR one day and I'll be screwed if I have that restriction.dirtmerchant Thanks this. -
what it is, its a post card looking card with the eye measurements the DOCTOR takes of your eyes. todays eye checking machines measure so precisely now compared to machines of years ago. my doctor has sort of like an MRI (for lack of a better description of this particular machine)for the eyes.
ABSOLUTELY NO DMV monkey can REJECT WHAT AN EYE CARE PROFESSIONAL puts on that card....!!!
now, it may be a card of a different color in your state, so always INQUIRE at your eye care professional....
and have your eye care professional's phone number on "speed dial" on your cell phone...if one monkey at the DMV challenges what the doctor says...??? call HIM RIGHT FROM THE LINE YOU ARE STANDING IN....!!!
in fact, he may tell you that too......!!!!
our eye care professionals DO KNOW the DOT regulations...!!!kerosene jockey Thanks this. -
Excellent points Rerun! There's no reason at all he cannot drive with corrective lenses, contacts, coke bottles, whatever! He could even ask his doctor (or STRAT57) about laser eye surgery. The only stipulation maybe that he renews his medical card once a year instead of two.
Gotta love that eye machine at the DMV huh?! Boy if that thing doesn't have MERSA (staff) written all over it! Nothing like sticking your forehead in someone else's face grease. "Yes sir your vision is just perfect, however you better go get checked for herpes now!" "The last guy to look through the machine busted 4 pusy pimples on the forehead bar and left a booger on the right lens!

yep, as long as he passes the DOT by the measured readings from an eye professional..

I was wondering why the doc didn't give you a presription to get you to 20/20.
I always have a hard time with the eye test at my doc,if you are do not look into the machine at the correct angle,I can't see everything the way you are supposed to see them. I end up being 20/20 by the chart and blind as a bat with the machine -
People, People, listen to me. 20/20 is not reading the bottom line. It's about the 3rd line from the bottom. That just tell you to read the bottom line. Then they say read whatever line you can, right? I always have 20/20 and I can only read about the 3 rd line from the bottom. Now you know.
