This happened to me on the way home Saturday and got me thinking. This is a question for new drivers and will hopefully help them out. And yes I know how to drive w/o a clutch :biggrin_2554:

If the clutch goes out do you know how to safely drive to a safe place or for repair? What if you have to stop?

you turn the motor off, put it in gear and turn back on when you are ready to move

I drove my car for about a month w/out a clutch. Different from a truck, I'm sure, but it was still pretty hairy! Taught me to "float" in my car, anyhow.

Most of the newer trucks won't start in gear you have too push the cluch in, and if the cluch is out it most likely won't start once you shut it down, safety thing

Mud dog, hoping you come back on and let us know, cuz honestly never thought about that and would not have a clue as to what to do. Although we always had to double clutch in school, one instructor showed how you do not even have to use the clutch., but also advised us until we get a ton of experience, to not even try it..

What's the answer Mud dog? Now I have a need to know..

    Thanks

I've run brand new iron for a long time and never had one with a clutch disconnect but I've ran nothing but paccar in my fleet. The correct answer is shut it off when you stop put it in gear and start the motor when your ready to go. If a clutch is purely mechanical which it is and has no power going to it how does a computer kno that it has gone out? Answer it doesn't. If you do have a clutch disconnect then just push the pedal to the floor and start it in gear.

My 2011 will start in gear with the clutch pedal pushed in.

I drove one from Memphis to NC with no clutch.
Not too bad except for going through the chicken house...

If you can float gears you can get it home..

Ok this is an area I know very little about. My only exposure to a bad clutch in a truck was a second hand report from a guy I worked with who happened to be leased on where I was working as an o/o.

We did more or less local runs of steel coils at that company. He said he was loaded near max gross and was 3/4 of the way to the delivery when he got to some hills and the truck wouldn't stay in any gear above 3rd. He said 1st 2nd and 3rd were ok. But if he shifted into a higher gear, it would pop out. He told me he put the 4-ways on and limped on the shoulder at 10mph the rest of the way to the receiver. Once he made the delivery and was empty, the truck would stay in gear again so he was able to get it home. He took it to his shop and they put a new clutch in it which cured the problem.

So my limited understanding is that the first sign of clutch failure is the truck popping itself out of higher gears when loaded heavy. Are there other clutch failure modes?

That's strange every time I've lost a clutch it just went out with not much warning of course I use my clutch very little anyway.

Had a clutch go out on a motorcycle once, that was fun limping that home. The clutch disconnect was just a circuit on the clutch mechanism itself, so if it had stopped I could have started it in gear, but it was a big heavy bike and would not have liked it. As it was I was able to get off the freeway and onto the back roads and just limp along.
