Try leaving the trailer parking valve in or set the trailer and leave the tractor button pushed it... but you didn't hear that from me

There are programming features called, "anti-tampering", simply leaving the parking brakes released/applied in any combination will not work.

    Heavyd,
I am more confused now than ever:
I called CA ARB.gov and they told me:
-when you have a "Clean Idle Certified" sitcker: it means you can idle all you want and you are compliant.
-If you do not have a sticker but your truck is CARB compliant, as all new engines are, you can drive in CA but can not idle more than 5 minutes.

I called twice, the first person I talked to did not seem to understand it much more than I do..lol...
the second person was also a little hesitant on some points but seemed pretty sure of the "Clean Idle sticker"

What you are saying is very much opposite what they told me.
Where did you get your info?

    thanks

    Heavyd Thanks this.

Idle shutdown is not an engine file parameter, it is an option, some units you can go in and just program it out some are protected by a customer password. That is to stop drivers from removing it.
    Just a thought!

This has been bugging me so I found the answers:
    From CA ARB website:

Are there situations where idling is allowed?
Yes. Idling is allowed in the following situations:
    • You are stuck in traffic
    • When idling is necessary to inspect or service your vehicle
    • You are operating a power take-off device
    • You cannot move due to adverse weather conditions or mechanical failure
    • You are queuing (must be beyond 100 feet from any residential area)
    • Your truck’s engine meets the optional low-NOx idling emission standard, and your truck is located more than 100 feet from any residential area (clean-idle label required)
See www.arb.ca.gov/noidle for a complete list of exemptions.

Here is something I did not know and seems important:
While at a school, the driver must shut down the engine immediately upon arrival and leave within 30 seconds of starting the engine.

Even your APU is under fire:
What restrictions apply to idle-reduction technologies?
    • You may not operate a diesel-fueled auxiliary power system for more than 5 minutes within a 100 feet of a residential area
    • Diesel-fueled auxiliary power systems (APS) on trucks with 2007 or newer model year engines must meet additional requirements (verified clean APS label required)
    • Fuel-fired heaters must meet certain emission standards
    Visit www.arb.ca.gov/noidle for further details.

    APU:
.....by either routing the APS exhaust through the PM trap of the truck engine or by retrofitting the diesel APS with a verified level 3
PM control device that reduces PM emissions by at least 85 percent.

    RECAP:
You can idle indefinitely with a "Clean Idle Sticker" but not within 100ft of residential
Your APU is not 100 % solution unless it is retrofitted as mentioned above, & the residential rule applies to APU's as well
    .
If the truck is only CARB compliant (no sticker) you can not idle more than 5 minutes in California

Many states have some similar regulations as well, however many places will let you idle if you are resting "Hours of service compliance at truck/rest stop"....Oddly enough this is an exemption in some parts in California. I did not totally understand the following. Sorry this is a little long, but it covers all questions I had and more.

    Example:
    CA, City of
    Sacramento
    Maximum Idling time:
    5 minutes
(prohibits refrigeration unit operation within 100’ of residential or school unless loading/unloading)

    Fines: Not <$100 nor >$25,000
    per violation

    Exemptions:
    - Traffic conditions/control
    - Vehicle safety inspection
    - Service or repair
    - Conform to manufacturer’s specifications
    - Power takeoffs involving cargo or work functions
    - Prevent safety or health emergency
    - Hours of service compliance at truck/rest stop
    - To recharge hybrid electric vehicles
    - California low-NOx idling label

Yes, I am sorry, you are right about the sticker vs 5 min shutdown. I shouldn't have used the term, "Certified Clean Idle" as that pertains to the sticker that does infact allow you to idle. Sorry, I was getting CARB compliant and "Certified Clean Idle" screwed up. You can order your truck to be either CARB compliant which requires a 5 min shut down if you want to go into CA, or you can order it to be "Certified Clean Idle" which does allow you idle in CA. Thanks for pointing that out.

I love to learn new stuff. I'm sure the laws will change again soon to make everything we found out obsolete, LOL!
