I'm thinking about starting a business to haul cars....This would be done with a pick up truck and a trailer behind...perhaps one that can hold 3 cars....
I am a little confused on 26001# weight thing....
Would that 26001# be the total weight of the pick up truck, trailer, and cars behind hauled ? Or just the trailer and the cars being hauled ? Or maybe just the weight of the cars ?
Thanks in advance....It seems confusing.
I want to haul cars...Do I Need a CDL ?

Your pickup truck isn't a cdl vehicle. If your gross combined weight is no more than 26,000, I don't believe you need a cdl even if you are towing more than 10,000.

Take an hour or so and research this sub-forum - lots and then some of your questions are answered ......... luck

If your trailer is over 10,000 then you need your cdl. Because then its considered a class A vehicle. I know one of the guys on here i speak to regulary is from NY and he had to get his cdl with his wedge and dually. If you dont agree go ahead, call your local Dmv and ask this simple question....."my trailer is over 10k......do i need a cdl? And they will say yes. You can take the test in a dually and a car trailer that has a trailer gvw over 10k but you will recieve a E and O restriction, (restrictions are universal now) automatic restriction- if you took the test in an auto, and an "Except tractor trailer" which means you cant drive a truck up to it thats designed to carry over 26k in the door or ID plate that has fifthwheel articulation, ie. A semi tractor. Now if you can get a trailer that the gvw says 9,999 then you dont need one but for some reason i highly doubt you'd be at a legal weight with 3 cars then and the dot would eat you alive.

Theres also multiple topics on here about it. Good luck

Some guys run a truck, trailer, and 3 lightweight cars and somehow manage to stay under 26k, but I personally like the ability to pick ANY 3 vehicles to put on my trailer w/o worrying about finding a scale before I hit the DOT scales. Just get your CDL in a dually and wedge at a minimum and you don't have to worry about keeping light.

You may not necessarily need a CDL with your trailer. New York states rule reads "
- A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross combination weight rating is 26,001 pounds or more". So if your 26k or under you should be ok. I would get it anyways.
