So Im still trying to adjust to new job/truck. In my first 3 weeks I've made a mistake with the splitter twice, that I'd never done before. This is in a 18 speed Eaton(not sure specifc model, truck is an '11 Pete if it helps)
My 2nd week I was upshifting and in 8 direct, moved the splitter up/ahead then for whatever reason, didn't realize i hadn't release the gear for almost a mile. Stupid mistake I know...
Then the other day I was running through a stretch of stop lights so I went to split down, slid it back, released accelerator but didn't realize it didn't make the shift for like 1/2 mile til I went to really get back on it again and it finally shifted.
While I know it's not good, is there any damage this could cause? I ask because I've noticed whenever I slide the splitter back or forth there is like a microsecond grinding noise. It's quick though and goes away before I even can move the stick, but no other 13/18 speed ive driven has ever made a similar noise... I only picked up on this when I drove a different truck for a morning and that one was quiet...
My confidence in general has been suffering of late for other reasons so I don't know if it just my mind messing with me but it just doesnt' seem like it shifts as smooth the last week or so as it did when I first started a few weeks ago. It seems like I'm going backwards, I'm totally off my timing, I'm jerky.
A job that I really was enjoying when I started at the beginning of the month, I'm becoming frustrated with at the end of the month because.
My boss is using my truck tmw for a job, I told him how it was acting and how I almost thought I was going backwards(mind you my road test with them I was as smooth as silk)so I guess will see what he says tomorrow......
I split a gear, but then didn't shift....Damage?

do it over and over and finally the big fork that moves the sliding clutch back and forth will wear razor sharp and will not grab the sliding clutch anymore, and will have to be replaced
-
it happens, i've done it a few times. although never to the actual of wanting to shift. but i brainfart and totally forget i moved the splitter.
BTW. the only time i use the splitter is on hills. even when i drove 120,000 pound double bellies. -
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Every now and then I'll either be dazed off in zombie mode, or really jammin gears in a hurry and my transmission will go off into what I call its 'black hole'. I just quickly get her back into neutral and re group. I'm sure that it ain't good, but for the say 10-15 times it probably happens to me a year, I've drove my truck going on 3 years, owned it the last 1.5 years. It hasn't done it any more or less the more times its happened so it can't be hurting things too bad.

They are pretty tough. I abused my 13 speed pretty bad when i first started driving. 200,000 miles later and I see no difference in it's performance. Yea, being mean to your trans will mak it wear out quicker, but they are designed to take the Bleep you put them through.
I still "brainfart" every once in a while and screw up. For me shifting has become second nature. Everyone in a while i will think about it and not know what gear im in and mess it up, even though not thinking about it worked fine. other times I'll preselect the upper split, but then forget if i releced the throttle and got into the upper gear or if im still int he lower. I've tried to shift from low to low of the next gear skipping the high because i thought i was in the high but never let off the throttle to do it. (knowing your trans and matching road speed and rpm will help here regardless of splitter position)
I mostly mess it up when im tired. -
I am about to finish my school. Having hard time with the alley dock, I will have more training this weekend.
Anyway i am trying to learn more about transmissions. few questions.
""Then the other day I was running through a stretch of stop lights so I went to split down, slid it back, released accelerator but didn't realize it didn't make the shift for like 1/2 mile til I went to really get back on it again and it finally shifted."" In this case could you press the clutch to break the engine torque? or could you use the j-break to slow down truck and would help to shift?
""I've noticed whenever I slide the splitter back or forth there is like a microsecond grinding noise."" Air leak problem? I got both from the Eaton Fuller service manual online, minus the j-break question.
Thanks. -
After a little more time Ive noticed it actually only makes the grinding sound when splitting back down to low/direct and is quiet going up.. I googled a couple different things and after reading a few different pages it could be as simple as moisture in the tank(amongst other causes)
While the truck ran a little bit, it sat a lot of the 6 weeks between the old driver and me starting, so condensation buildup is possible..
I read to check the air screen/filter as well and I tried to unscrew the cap and even with a pair of vice grips couldnt get it to move and stopped before I broke something. I was bit flustered with the cap and ended up forgetting to drain the tank yesterday...
Could either of these really be the possible issue? It almost seems to simple and I guess I feel if it was either of those it would also effect the up split as well, right? -
If you cannot remove the filter bowl using a pair of vice grips I believe it is long overdue for routine maintenance.

An O'l straight 7spd would solve all your problems, no splitting issues and no water/air issues on the trans. We all have to start somewhere so don't get to flustered but try to pay attention.....
