Hey,
I am looking to get my CDL license and have been studying to get my permit but there is one problem. I have never drivin a manual transmission (stick shift) vehicle in my life. I'm 35 and have been driving since high school so I have plenty of driving experience. However I didn't realize how difficult it is to acquire training in driving a manual transmission vehicle. I have contacted every driving school in my area (West Palm Beach, FL) that I have found on the internet and the phone book and none of them offer the course. I want to know (and probably have to know) how to drive a manual transmission vehicle before I get my CDL Permit because the permit is only good for 6 months (or you can extend it for an additional 6 months) & also before I start the CDL School I want to attend. I know for myself it would be easier learning on a car first versus a tractor trailer. I have also posted some ad's on craigslist to see if anyone is willing to help. Unfortunately none of my family is local and all my friends have automatic vehicles. I'm trying to get my Florida CDL Class A license for combination vehicles with air brakes. Eventually I would like to get the doubles/triples, tank & haz/mat endorsements. But first I have to get over this hump somehow!!! Anyone have any suggestions or able to help?!?!? Thanks
Scott S.
I need to learn how to drive a manual transmission vehicle!!!!

A point to consider.....
Driving a ten-speed transmission like you find in an big rig is only somewhat similar to driving the 5-speed you find in some cars. You don't necessarily need to know how to shift going into trucking school, as they should teach you that particular skill.
Besides, you can't possibly shift worse than some of the clowns I've seen claiming 3-4 years experience as perfeshunal trucker driverers......Big Don, Dryver and gearjammer1978 Thank this. -
I agree that driving a stick shift in a car is quite different than driving a manual transmission truck. In some ways attempting to learn to drive a stick in a car at the same time as learning to drive a truck might cause you some problems. At this point, if I were you, I would forget about learning to drive the stick in the car. Save that for later... and be wary of trying to grind gears without using the clutch when you try to drive the car ...

I knew how to drive a manual well before I ever learned to drive a truck. What happens is that it's then hard to break the habit of pushing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor to shift like you would in a car. In a truck, doing this will engage the clutch brake and make shifting the truck much more difficult.
Best in your case to just let the school teach you how to drive a manual transmission.gearjammer1978 and double yellow Thank this. -
Go to truck driving school. You'll be better off for it. Some companies will reimburse the tuition some companies have there own schools.

I cant shift my 5 speed diesel VW golf when i get out of the truck lol. I keep starting in second, trying to double clutch on hills or just float and almost break it. I try to shift at 1400 rpm which is way to low in my car. I also try to shift into reverse at 70 mph since that's the next gear position in a truck.
Manual cars require single clutching (or floating if your wife doesn't mind lol) Trucks require double clutching or floating.
1st in a 5 speed car is up and to the left. First in a 10 speed truck is down and to the left.
Starting from a stop in a car requires gas. Starting from a stop in the truck requires no throttle action.
In all reality, they are totally different. Your school doesn't offer a shifting coarse because its part of the normal class. You will be fine with no manual experience...and if your not, just pass your cdl and work for a company driving an auto.gearjammer1978 Thanks this. -

When I went to Prime Inc for their school and training we had two guys in our class who had never driven a stick before and the instructors said it is almost better that they hadn't driven a stick before because they did have bad habits of driving a stick in a car or pickup.

Well from reading the posts the majority are saying it might be better to start the truck driving school not knowing how to drive a stick shift. I just assumed you would have to know before starting the school. That's what I get for assuming. I will contact the two schools I have in mind and see what they say. I technically misspoke when I said I never drove a stick shift. My first time was for an hour yesterday with a friend and it didn't go as planned so I'm just not counting it. I think I almost gave her a heart attack (she was an older lady) because I must of stalled out about a dozen times. It's going from stop into first that is the biggest pain. I did manage it a couple times. I know with enough practice it'll come naturally, just getting that point!!!
