I can't pass my skills test at school because I only get 20 min behind the wheel training 4 days out of the week. I'm supposed to graduate in two weeks. What northern California companies would hire a permit driver

If you can drive ok just to pass the driving test. Then you're good to go, kinda. Most companies will want new drivers to go with a trainer for more experience. Because they already know lots to CDL schools only show new drivers how to pass the road test.
I thought they passed new law about minimum driving/training standards everyone had to meet. Maybe not, I have not been keeping up with that. When I did my training we did lots of city driving with instructor with like 3-4 guys in truck. Everyone drove like 30 minutes and we all switched out. So basically we all learned from each other mistakes as each guy took his turn driving. We had backing lot we could use on our own.
Their are little tricks they told us about driving like how to shift gears or how to take left or right turns. I don't see many people talk about that or maybe I got lucky and got better training from the trucking company.tscottme and snowmantrucking101 Thank this. -
You may be OK and probably pass the test for your CDL.

Salidino's Foodservice - has run ads for cdl-permit drivers. Also pays hourly while you get a CDL.
This website shows where the distribution centers are. Looks like one in West Sacramento.

A lot, maybe most, schools teach the students to pass the backing maneuvers using specific cues rather than really teaching them to back. It doesn't take much time to learn to pass the test when you're doing it that way as long as you're following their instructions exactly. You'll have to learn how to really backup when you're in training with your first company. I had maybe an hour of actual on-road driving time before I took the test, and that was even with a manual transmission. It, sadly, really doesn't take a lot of skill to pass the test. Most people in my class that failed on the first try, and had about as much training as it sounds like you have, failed on the pre-trip inspection. If they could get past that, most of the time they passed the rest of it.

$18 - $28 an hour
Valid CDL permit with a clean driving record and interested in company sponsored training. -
My school was terrible and I for sure did not get enough seat time.
You just need to barely pass the test then find a company with a good training program to teach you to actually drive the truck.
Getting a good trainer is far more important than whatever school you go to or how easily you passed the testtscottme Thanks this. -
Many many drivers are incapable of improving.
No matter what.
The OP seems to have the right attitude, and wants to spend more seat time in the rig, which is always a good sign.
