I all, I got my CDL but no experience other then school. I am considering Swift and if I go will go to Greer, SC for orientation. I would love to hear from some of you on what you think if this is a good idea.
A little about me, I am a 44 year old, female, married but no young children. Hubby and I are used to time apart, since he travels a lot for his job. I have some experience of being OTR but not driving. I lived in a truck with a good friend of mine for 3 months. I know one thing about my learning style, patience and no yelling at me and I will learn very well.
I just want some honest opinions on if you think I will do okay with swift or look elsewhere.
I have my CDL and considering Swift (Greer, SC)...I would like to know what you think

Swift is okay and i knw the terminal where there in greer but id possible check out some others before i commit to them. I personally drive for prime inc or new prime out of springfield mo and they so far have been straight..

Prime = reefer + the slowest trucks on the road = no thanks
(Even slower than Swift *ouch*l
Greer is a good terminal with lot's of trucks and good support staff.
It would be a good place to start if they'll have you.
I'm 2 yrs in and no major complaints
(Except when PRIME parks next to me with that rumble box reefer!) -
Swift is solid company, but you can make more money with refrigerated. Check with some and see if they accept your CDL school.
Central Refrigerated
Marten Transport
Crete Carrier (dry, refrigerated, flatbed divisions)

Do Swift drivers still unload some? I haven't driven truck in several years, but back when I was driving (local, Regional, OTR, Jockeying) Swift drivers had to unload more often than some other OTR companies. Has that changed? I may or may not get back into driving but one of the main issues I always had was unloading. I have had low back problems forever and if I was unloading, I would probably not last long before breaking down. Other than that, I have no physical problems whatsoever...good health. I have been seriously considering getting back into driving but I worry about these OTR companies requiring a driver to unload.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, because there is a Swift terminal 40 miles from my home. -
Most of our freight is no touch. If a trip is driver unload or driver assist it is almost always marked on the preplan. There are some dedicated accounts that you know going in you will be unloading the trailer.

I've had one driver assist in 110,000 miles with Swift.

In 20 months, I have not touched one box or pulled on pallet. I still even have 6 of the 10 comchecks that I was given during orientation. Now I know that there are some tire loads that driver unloads, but never seen one. Now on the other side, there is one customer that we have that depending on what is going on when arrive, you can end up being the yard jockey, pulling the ldd trailers out of doors and putting mt's back in, and it does not state on the pplan, but does as soon as you walk into shipping. Last time that I was there, I was lucky. Only had to pull my ldd and pu my mt in the door. The driver b4 me, had to move 4. It is Owens Corning in Mt. Vernon, OH, ohhh, and we do not get paid for this. It is in the contract that we have with them.
