Hi everybody, got a quick question for you. I have a Virginia CDL but I don't drive a truck. Is there any way to let my medical card expire and still keep my CDL? I may drive in the future, but for right now I would rather not pay the $60 for a new card.

It goes into suspension if you don't renew the card, right?
AFAIK, the CDL is invalid if you don't have a current med card on file.

Does this mean the CDL reverts to a no-class regular operator's license?

    Montgomery Thanks this.

Not sure about Virginia but in North Carolina you can let it expire. You just need to go by DMV and submit a form which they will help you do and when you decide to drive you have to get a medical and submit it prior to driving a commercial vehicle.

Down load the self/cert. form from your state and read it to see if you can be excepted from having the card by CK. 1 of those boxes?

Go to the below link and complete the Self Certification form and submit to the address or fax number listed on the form. If you wish to retain your CDL without renewing your medical card, then check either EXCEPTED (Interstate driver) or EXCEPTED (Intrastate driver) and you will be able to retain your CDL without needing a current medical card. Do not let your CDL be downgraded. You may need it later and this will keep you from going through the whole process of obtaining a CDL all over again.

National law from the Feds, no medical on record with secretary of state in your home state equals NO CDL nation wide.

i could be wrong, but i think my uncle and bro in law did the self cert.

not med, no cdl. my uncle retired so he didn't care whether it stayed or not. bro in law though, had to correct a condition to pass. and once passed, he had to renew. don't remember the whole process he went through.

i could be wrong, but i don't think self certs did them any good.

Intra and inter are the only two options. You mean choose excepted rather than non-excepted?
