Hydraulic dovetail considerations

    First time poster..

    I'm in the process of ordering a new Diamond C 40' gooseneck for general hotshot freight and wanted to get any opinions on hydraulic dovetails. The initial plan was to go with the standard dovetail and monster ramps, but if there is any significant advantages to having the hydraulic dovetail I'd definitely consider getting that added on. I've noticed that you don't see many hotshots with dovetails out on the roads, but most of what I have seen have been oilfield related hauling tubulars, etc and I'm not looking at targeting that market.

    Since I'm just starting out I want to have the most versatile trailer possible yet still utilize all the deck space as needed, while still being cost effective.

    Tare weight is also a consideration.
    How much more does that hydraulic trailer weigh?
    How much more maintenance does it require?

    Good point and something I haven't considered.

    I'v e got a call into Diamond C trailers to ask about shortening the neck of a 40' trailer to meet the 65' rule. When I get them on the phone I'll ask about weight comparison of monster ramps vs hydraulic dovetail.
    If its much of a difference its likely not worth pursuing. I'm hoping to get it ordered on Monday as its a 6 week build time estimate.

    Also ask about the weight rating on the dovetail portion as I do believe the hyd tail setup lowers the weight rating of the rear of the trailer.

    I'll definitely check on that also. I wish the trailer companies had more detailed info on their sites as it would save a lot of time.

    For straight hot shot it may not be worth it, I haul equipment and would never go back to flip ramps. So much safer to have the tail on the ground, no struggles flipping ramps, also I can lift the tail up to a dock or other truck. I've had mine 3yrs now going to buy another C, but this one will be a 30,000 lb rated step deck with hyd tail

    What is the load rating on the tail at? I saw it mentioned that it’s 10,000 but that’s not confirmed numbers.

    lift is 10,000 lb carry is rated at the center of tail I think it was 5,000 lb. I've carried a 9,000 lb skid steer fully on the tail many times

    The cons outweighed the pros for me and as long as you don’t have a hernia or bum back the mega ramps are the way to go.

    Thanks. I ended up ordering the monster ramps. Should have it in 6 weeks or so.
