As someone who is getting ready to take the leap and become a driver, do a CDL school and start looking for work, how bad is it for me now with all this stuff happneing with Yellow?
Is this gonna create thousands of job-seeking truckers out there grabbing up all the available jobs?
Maybe they're doing that already.
I've noticed at least one company I had my eye on, they had a nice sign-on bonus available before, along with a lot of nice extras, that disappeared from their website last week.
How worried should I be about Yellow now?

It's not just Yellow Freight.
The overall general freight market right now is in a slump.
A lot of jobs that I saw posted a while back...are now gone.
Carriers have tightened up their hiring requirements in many places.
Don't let this discourage you from pursuing your ambitions -- instead, just take your time.
Maybe when you've finished with CDL school -- things will (by then) have improved.

till then, seek out vocational or trade or technical schooling, and be a tradesman, earn more money, be home regularly, have better benefits and a life.misterG, slim shady, billermo and 2 others Thank this. -
there is always work as a driver, somewhere... go find it and quit qorrying about it.
Jamie01, bryan21384, pashaz and 8 others Thank this. -
If/when all the drivers in Yellow's truck fleet look for other work....that will be (as I understand it) a bit over 9,100 drivers.
The job market for class "A" truck drivers in the United States is still much larger than that -- even in the worst of times.
You might say the jobs they would finally take up would be "a drop in the bucket"....for your job market of interest.

A friend noted that the other LTL stock prices had gained even after weak Q2 earnings reports.
I'd pursue Saia/ODFL etc.Lonesome, Numb, billermo and 1 other person Thank this. -
There are 6,000 new CDL drivers being created each month. 80-90% of those new CDL drivers will leave the industry before they work 12 months. I would not avoid trucking because there might be an extra 9,000 drivers available to be hired. The key to staying in the industry is to research any company before you work at the company. IMO, that means talking to current working drivers doing the work you will be hired to do at the company. You will not achieve good results with an online only effort. Avoid CR England at all cost. They advertise the most and many newbies think they are the only company hiring newbies. There are 100,000 other trucking companies to work for.

Can’t be picky anymore take what you can get. Kinda the old school way. Might have to go OTR now for a year. Depends on location also. Having a CDL doesn’t mean squat now having experience and clean record does.
billermo Thanks this. -
I’ve seen this cycle before, it’s gonna be bad for at least 2 more years. This year is about inflation, next year is an election year.
stingray83 and billermo Thank this. -
Ok, thanks for all the input. It sounds like it’s just bad now, but that Yellow is just part of it, maybe not a big part. When it rains, it pours, I guess.
