How to tell when the cummins holset vgt turbo is failing?

Hi, everyone seems to agree that the cummins vgt turbo is a ticking time bomb, just wondering what typically happens when they fail? The reason I'm asking is because my 2005 is just about to turn 500k on the original turbo. I should also say I had the egr deleted about 55k miles ago, anyways most of the time when pulling grades with 70-80k lbs,the exhaust temp will only get to about 1000, no matter how hard im on it, and it pulls good around 35-40psi of boost, but now some of the time it will get to 1100 real easy and sometimes quick hit 1300-1400, I back of it, down shift then it will stay around 1100, when it acts up boost is still around 30+, and usually once I crest a hill, or pass, as soon as I back off the the throttle there's a fairly loud screeching , whistling sound for 20-30 seconds. Sorry for carrying on, hopefully I presented a clear picture. I want a little advice before condemning the turbo. If it is bad, ill probably be putting a Borg warner non waste gate, with pdi manifold. Thank you!

Do you have black smoke pumping out of your stacks yet?
    Second....You'll notice Turbo lag.......

Btw....EGR's are designed (Be sure to thank Mary Nichols from CARB for that....:biggrin_25516:) to fail...They'll take the VGT with them....I know...I have had the EGR...The EGR Cooler and three VGT's replaced on my '09......

Wow, 3 turbos on an '09! It smokes pretty good when I shift, not really at all when pulling hard.

you let me know where you get this borg warner and pdi manifold from.

and yes your turbo is going out. and no you won't experience lag.

i just had mine rebuilt and it lasted 2 weeks. this time however, it's makeing whistles and whirs. and the smoke is coming back just like before. only this time it's constant where as before it was off and on. with no noise. it just slowly went out.

when the thing finally got fixed. there really wasn't much power or performance improvement. only the smoke went away. and my milage only went up .5. so instead of the mid 4's. i'm in the very low 5 range. and i also installed a shuttle high flow muffler with the rebuilt turbo.

bottom line is. you really wont' see a performance difference untill it's basically dead. but you will see smoke.
and all that extra fuel is diluting your oil. not good for the engine.

Thanks for the reply, is the truck driveable once the turbo fails? Or are the exhaust temps gonna go through the roof? If I go with the pdi setup I will pick the parts up at a place in missoula montana(no screwing around to get it tax free) and put it on at home, just have to send the ecm out to get the vgt deleted.

there won't be any exhaust temps i don't think. beucase the engine isn't working that much anymore. it's basically being choked to death.

What I experienced with the ISX turbo was when you started to see oil leaking from the actuator shaft, then it is time to consider getting a new one. That oil could also be leaking in to the CAC and if it gets loaded up with oil, you have a real mess on your hands an likely will have to just bite the bullet and get a new CAC. Since the turbo is already too darn expensive, adding insult to injury by having to replace the CAC is a real hard hit. Mine lasted until almost 800,000 miles, but the cost and hassle gave me just another nudge to quit fighting with all this stuff and order up a glider with a pre-egr engine. A new turbo on the ISX was $3600 (with core exchange) on the parts counter last spring. A new turbo on my new glider is $695 with free shipping (and no core exchange) to my front door. Now it is practical to have a spare turbo on hand.

Thanks for the reply, I've been following some of your posts on your glider, I'm glad everything worked out for you. It's pretty amazing, you can buy a turbo for less then the electric control box that controls mine ($800)! And actually if I do go with the oe turbo ill have to check around, I know cummins told me it was $4200, so $3600 seems like a bargain. Thanks again, being able to get information, advice and opinions on here is priceless!

Don't forget, when it starts to use oil,the axle off the turbo has play on it.
It can cause the the vanes to touch the housing...............which can give you an engine filled with iron pieces.
Not good for pistons and valves.

04 Macks were prone to do that.
