Not sure if this is the best section of the forum to ask but I didn't see a specific section for cattle hauling.

Anyways, as the title says how does someone get into cattle hauling? Is there specific "starter" companies that will hire drivers that don't have any cattle hauling experience? Seems like most companies are small or they're o/o but I assume that theres more to it than meets the eye. Just wondering how someone even learns the tricks of the trade. Thanks.

It might help to know if you have any driving experience? We have a number of bull haulers on the forum here, as well as some pig haulers. (Don't know if we have any Chicken Wagons or not, though.):biggrin_25525:

National Carriers has a bullhauler division in Tyler, TX.
National Carriers hires new CDL grads, but don't know if they do for bullhauling.

Find them and ask. Use to do it. It's dirty, smelly and they either run you so hard you can't rest or you starve. I used to clean trailers and change tires to keep from starving. Cattle kick too and a 1200 lb fat steer can knock you a long way without horns. Worst load I loaded, Longhorn Bulls in CO going to Albuquerque to slaughter. One had been over every fence at the sale barn. They were wild and when I went through downtown Durango, they were fighting and bawling and it sounded like a train wreck with an aluminum trailer. Floyd "Cheesy" Deering was killed in 1974 by a Whiteface bull that was probably trying to turn around in a trailer and gutted him.

Contact Champion in Hereford Texas. They are always looking for fresh meat lol. I will say it's not something you do to look cool or for the money although both are perks of the job. There has to be more in it for you to really excel at it.

Almost 19 years I pulled a pott. It's a young mans game and I'm only getting older it's the one addiction I can't seem to find a way to quit

I would suggest starting out slow, just to see if it is really for you.

That job ain't for everyone, be carefull what you wish for, and as wore out posted its a young mans game..

Not many (at least the good ones) will openly advertise, based on my experience its been word of mouth..Thats how I got into it was word of mouth...Over the years I had run with many bull haulers and a good many of them said "if you ever need a job call XXXX tell them XXXX sent ya" thats what I did one day...

You'll run hard, tired, sick, heavy, and everything but legal....Its not a job for the meek.

One of the first loads I hauled I was chatting with a seasoned vet at a sale and he said "its not a question of if you get hurt, but when and how bad" then he showed me a scar on his arm that was a good 6-8 inches long and easily an inch wide "they'll git ya" is what he said after showing that scar then he laughed..

Not trying to piss on anyones dreams or ambitions just know what your getting into..

and for the record I admit to being too old to run like that anymore, but I'm thinking real hard about making that call and going back..

Don't do it Mike. Take up freestyle mountain climbing, or something easy instead. Besides, I understand there is a new test for wannabe bull haulers. First, you have to tip a whole herd of cows, before they will hire you!:biggrin_25523:
