They say my tractor GVWR should be on the inside of my drivers door on a plate, but what do we do when the plate has been removed, I am thinking my GVWR should be the total allowable weights for each axle added up, and that should be my GVWR. Am I correct to think this would be the GVWR? is for my PUC documents, I don't want to tell you what the old PUC document said before I bought it, but I have been using the numbers and been getting away with it, but now I want to make sure all documents are correct and in order. If anyone can help me calculate or guide me to a method to get a correct GVWR, I would appreciate it.

The dealer can get you a replacement sticker, they just need the VIN. You'll want it on there if you hit an inspection

No, you can't add gross axle weight ratings to get your gvwr. The sum of the gawr's might be higher.

I dig gps man and we agree on a lot of stuff so this ain't a slam in any way, but I have a lot of experience in this and no; the registration is the apportioned weight. You set the weight you want to be apportioned at for each jurisdiction when you fill out the form for the IRP (registration). It's how they determine the taxes and how much the base state sends to each of the other states. It's according to your mileage in each state and how heavy you apportioned in that state. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is determined by the manufacturer and usually lighter than the (usually) total vehicle weight you apportion for because you add the trailer (GCWR - the C being combined). The GVWR of the truck plus the GVWR of the trailer (GCWR) should be close to the apportioned weight on the registration but some folks haul light loads only as a dedicated deal so they don't apportion at the full GCWR because that saves on taxes. Problem with that comes if you are saving money by apportioning at 60K but get that 70K load, you are overweight despite the fact you would otherwise be legal. That scenario happened to a former client ( I used to do this stuff as a side business). He wanted to save money and apportioned light. I cautioned him. He said OK. Same numbers. Apportioned at 60K, took that heavier load that put him at 70K, which is still 10K shy of normal legal gross. Got pulled in at a FL scale and was selected by random for a level 3 (paperwork only) inspection. He weighed 70K, he was apportioned in FL for 60K and got a fat 10K over gross ticket. I told him I'd fight it but not to expect me to win. You paid to run 60K in FL. They caught you running 70K. They made up the difference with a fine. Probably gonna lose the appeal. I did and that was exactly what the appeal board denied it for.

Best to just do as the poster that suggested getting a replacement decal from a dealership. Poster is correct in that you really need one and you're talking about $5 and 5 minutes to get. Maybe 10 and 10. Still. Just put a new decal on and go by that. CYA.

GVWR is set by manufacturer and should be on a plate affixed to your door. If it isn't, then you need to contact your dealer and get one.
