    Newbie here:

What are some strategies y'all use to flesh out your loads. Seems whenever I am able to find loads TO a location, I'm stuck hauling nothing back. How were you people able to overcome it? Not important for me to go directly back home either, by the way.

Considering just finding a consistent route and then spending some time trying to meet with every single agent in that and surrounding areas. Not afraid to work for it.

Rule one, don't call it a backhaul. The second a broker knows that, the lower the rate

^^^ yup no such thing as back haul.... Just a haul from where your sitting at to the next location. IF they hear you sya backhaul or know your trying to get home rate about cut in half.

Easy to find backhauls. You don't want any of those though.

FFS... Their is nothing wrong with back hauls. They are a result of the supply and demand nature of our economy. If you know what your doing you will use them to raise your running mile. If you have a ton of flatbed loads moving out of Chicago and not enough trucks you may get say 3 dollars per mile going to Washington on a 2000 mile load. Then you load up some Kaiser Aluminum for 1.50 after say bouncing 200 miles and go back to Chicago with another 2000 mile load.

You just ran 4200 miles and grossed 9,000 dollars presumably in a week.

The running mile for the week comes out to 2.14

Your costs as an independent with truck and trailer + own authority should not exceed 1.30.

So you just took home 84 cents per mile for the week and you hauled a gasp *Backhaul*

find your next load before you take off with current load. in trucking: learn to plan a few days ahead. never take a load with having away out of where your going.

I just follow the money. Make sure its going to a decent lane. Then pre-jump on the next best rate with miles. Often I'll pre-book 2 - 3 loads out. I get back home when I get back home.

Make enough money out bound to bounce home empty.
the word back haul is like holding a 'will work for free" sign.
