Buddy I hate to say it but you're completely screwed. Stay in the military there's less bull to deal with and you will definitely be home more often. Just my opinion on the matter. If she grew up around the industry and doesn't want you to get into it did you stop to think that maybe she's trying to save you from making a big mistake? If you got a little one running around staying where your at or finding a different career other than trucking is a better bet. Sounds to me like you are both pretty young so you have enough problems to deal with already. Ever wonder why trucking has the highest divorce rate of any other career? There's a reason for it. Find something else to do if you don't want to throw your entire life away 6 months after you start driving. And don't listen to that crap somebody is bound to tell you of "well if she leaves me then it wasn't meant to be" that's just something people say to make you feel better after you screwed up. I've had a relationship end over my truck supposedly doesnt really bother me now because that truck should've always came first looking back on it. But that's what you are going to have to realize, trucking is going to be ahead of family. You can say oh no it doesn't come first but you ain't getting paid if that truck ain't moving so its either go and get paid PR stay home and make nothing. I have a feeling your wife don't want you to do this because she has a better grasp of what's going to happen than you do. By all means its your decision but I'd suggest listening to your wife.

If you can, stay in the military. Retire from there, and then you'll have another 25 years or so to drive.
There's even more bs teaching school than in the military, let alone trucking.
    Wish I'd stayed in.
Y'all take care and keep mama happy.

If you can not stand the bs in the service, then you can not stand the bs in trucking, how do I know-

    Retired military 22yrs
    Fleet manager
    CDL since 97
    Currently: Company Driver
Married to the same Wife for 34 years

    I am working for Ashley Furniture-great job-Good people-Good pay-Home weekly(driving) I have 2 other brothers in trucking=

Other brother= Working for Wal-Mart making really good money ^6 figures^ we call him easy money. LOL

Another brother= Driving for USA truck at the bottom of the food chain just making it, putting in his time for the next job.

One answer to your problem, stay in earn the retirement and free medical bene's- for life-, you will need it when you become a Truck driver, remember you will start at the bottom for pay and money for many years, before you have enough exp to land that better paying job. Or start the paper work for the US Coast Guard. I got my first retirement check when I was 39. Went in when I was 17.

Get the wife in a medical school to learn a trade so when you get out, you will have a good income from her, then a retirement from you with medical benes' then you can go play-think very hard about it. After this hitch you may have 16 more yrs and you can retire, were are you going to go and get that, along with free medical with no medical caps? Trucking-I don't think so.

And trust me when I say this-IF YOU CAN NOT HANDLE THE BS IN THE SERVICE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE BS IN TRUCKING!

    With all due respect----

PM me if you want to talk!

I'm more than a little shocked that so many are actually comparing the bs in the military to the bs in trucking. There is no comparison. From the little things like being told what to wear and how to wear it to the big thing...you know that part where you're told to go put your life on the line for whatever garbage some bureaucrat deems worthy. Trucking sucks balls but it's not even comparable to the military.

To the op use your money and get yourself an education and talk to your wife about doing so as well if she hasn't already.

Putting faith only in the sweat of your brow is a suckers bet. Gather knowledge learn to use all the tools in your arsenal. Driving is fine, but it's low hanging fruit for a reason.

No everybody in the military is required to put their life on the line . Trucking is the 10th most dangerous occupation in the country . Trucking does allow you to bail out when you want but it ends up being an expensive experience . Military your are paid a regular salary even when sick , disabled , or on leave . In trucking you don't get paid for the all the work you do .

Statistically speaking the relationship isn't going to last so go do what you want to do! If you want to drive a truck them drive a truck! Try like hell to find a local gig. I don't care what anyone says, new guys don't have to go OTR for their first job. Finding a local job is totally possible!
