Not possible. Plain and simple. Want a glider? Buy a glider. You can't change your VIN and the VIN will always indicate that your truck was sold with an emission compliant engine.

I think the only way to legally do that is that you have to reconstruct the truck.

I think that means you would have to actually switch cabs.

I don’t think that would work either.
My Freightliner has the vin number engraved in the frame and is easily visible when you open the hood.

Still doesn't legally make the truck a glider.

An owner can do whatever they want with their iron. Skirting the law is a risk you're taking though.

Chances of getting caught are slim for a one truck guy, but you lack the “GL” in your VIN to make it a glider. Technically any “repower” would need to be with an engine that has the same emissions on it.

I don't know how other states work, but in Pennsylvania if you switch the cab to another truck, the truck becomes reconstructed. In Pennsylvania anyway all gliders have a reconstructed title.

You have to take pictures from all four sides and you have to have pictures of the process of you changing it and there's paperwork involved in doing all of that.

When all of that comes back from the state the truck is no longer a 2012 Freightliner whatever. It is a Pennsylvania reconstructed truck title number xxxxxxxx.

The way that I understand it when it is titled that way you can put any engine that you want in there.

I had a post a while back asking the same question. @Ridgeline gave me that answer and I do believe it to be correct.

Need to find some 2002 and older titles. Reconstruct from there. You can pretty much replicate any stamp or I'd tag these days

I think you can probably repower any truck up to about 2003 with whatever engine that you want.

It's hard to understand just reading a post what anyone particularly means. But if you're suggesting finding an older title and trying to change the VIN numbers on the truck, that is a big big big No-No.

I couldn't even begin to imagine the troubles that could come from that. Cheaper and easier to just switch cabs or buy an older truck.

Call and ask fitzgerald. They are on the forefront of glider legislation. And judging by the complete disappearance of glider trucks on their lot and replacement with new trailers for sale, im thinking its a no go.
