Just wondering how to check carrier bearing in my vnl 670. there is about 1/2" up and down movement when I push up on the driveshaft mostly in the rubber mount.

Yep, time for a new one.
Getting the old one off is way more fun when you are in an air conditioned waiting room watching somebody else do it.

well next time i will do it myself because my mechanic could not get the old one off so he just got a grinder / hack saw and cut it off, (i could have done that myself).

Another give away is the rubber posts that hold the bearing away from the casing, if those are broken and sagged its a good sign that its out.

They have a nasty habit of seizing themselves to the driveshafts..... If you dont have the means to cut them off I would pay a shop to do it
