Ok so I’ve just finalized my LLC as owner operator driving a box truck and got my info I need and am working to get my DOT# and insurance coverage. I’m using 123loadboards if that adds any info for you. My question is, once I get everything filed, Dot# and insurance and I book a load, what are the companies I pick up a load from going to require of me to pick up the load? What paperwork? I don’t want to book a load and agree on a rate and show up and they ask for something I wasn’t prepared for. If anyone has any advise or experience from your first pick ups that you could give to a new guy coming into the transporting world, that would be awesome!
How to be prepared for my first load pick up (help)

Every place is different so you go into the place and ask them where they want you, and ask them what they want you to do.
You being in a little box truck, you don't have a lot to offer them other than to put it on, secure it (which is another issue altogether), and go.
Wargames, Albertaflatbed and Grumppy Thank this. -

Most shippers require a pick up number to give to the shipping clerk to get loaded. Once loaded you will be required to sign a copy of the BOL ( Bill of Lading) to give back to the shipping clerk. Shipping clerk will give you your copies of the BOL and a seal. Make sure the numbers on the seal match the number of the seal on the BOL. Deliver the load to the consignee, once you are unloaded and the shipment is counted, make sure that they sign a copy of the BOL that you keep for proof of delivery, so that you can be paid. Always read the rate con from the broker, prior to accepting the load, for any additional instructions that they want you to follow, on the behalf of the customer. Failure to do so may be used as an excuse to not pay or fine you.

Hi so first of all I would get on DAT load board, pay for the early access. If I remember correctly 123 is mostly for semis, I could be wrong.
So when you book a load with a broker they will send you a "rate con" which should provide the details of the rate and the pick up address and receiving point address. Maybe contact info.
I used PDF filler to sign rate con and save the rate con to my records and send signed copy immediately back to the broker. Time is of essence you could lose the load.
Head to shipper... I usually arrive, find the shipping door and announce at the window "hi I am with XYZ Logistics picking up a load going to..."
What's the load number?
Ok let me look on my info sheet (rate con). then provide them with numbers. Never show shipper rate con if you can help it.
The give you shipping papers (these are called bill of lading BOL and maybe some other papers) showing more info, product, weight, contact people phone numbers etc.
You want hopefully 2 copies of the BOL and get the shipper and then the receiver to print sign and date. Shipper sign is good, receiver PSD is MANDATORY.
Ask any other questions, my brain is foggy as it was a two years ago and long covid but will try to help.
