Interior looks pretty good for a 89. Eventually will need a paint job, but I'm not worried about that right yet. He might be throwing in a couple extra tires, and he's throwing in the flat top sleeper with it. Has around aprox 700 thousand and some miles on a Detroit 11.1. They took out a 3406B and replaced it with the Detroit. Newer rear ends, newer tranny, fifth wheel is around year and a half old. 15 speed!! I wish it was a straight 10, or 13. Set at 460 hp I believe. Guy was using it to haul steel. He's also putting a alternator on it before he sells it. Started it up today with the alternator off of it which tells me the batteries are pretty good. He also put I think he said all new injectors in it bought another Ecm he's throwing in with it. Yolks, u bolts, etc... Asking 12,000 OBO. A buddy of mine said it was worth prolly 5,000 the way it sets. Any info is great! I heard 11.1 were great engines they just can't pull hills for nothing! Thanks everyone! N Happy Fathers Day to all you guys!
How much you guys think a 89 Peterbilt 379 is worth?

Between $5k-$30k. Some guys would pay up to $30k for a pre-emission truck in good shape. $12k sounds ok if the miles are right. That should have way more miles though. Is 700k on a rebuild?
Bfr38 Thanks this. -
Read the post guy said it had a cat and swapped out with a detriot.

Hi Bfr, doesn't sound like a lot of money for one of the coolest trucks ever made. ( sorry, 359's are THE coolest) I don't have a lot of experience with the 11.1, I thought the 12.7 was a heck of a motor. Clearly worth it. If you can run it for a while, and try and bank some money, you'll be way ahead of the game( and drive a cool truck, to boot) I guess the biggest problems on an older truck, ( and that's not a heck of a lot of miles for an '89) is the electrical system. The fusebox on those, I think, is behind the clutch pedal, at least it was on my 359, and that was a source of trouble, hood wiring takes a beating, opening and closing the hood, so that might need work. Otherwise, think of it this way, someone probably spent 100 grand on that truck, and you are driving it for a fraction of that. I'd go for it. Good luck.
Oh, one more thing, be wary of "alternator eaters". More than likely, a bad ground causes alternators to overheat. Make sure the cab has a good ground too.

12,000 isnt to much for the best truck ever build although cant understand why it was swapped out with a little 11.1 and not a 12.7 or kept the 3406b.
201 Thanks this. -

For the sake of comparison, I paid $35K CDN for the '86 359 in the sig pic. I thought that was a little too much but WTF I wanted it. The seller said he inframed it, replaced nozzles, cylinder head and turbo. SInce I bought it a year ago I've done rad, CAC, all the rubber, A/C compressor, wiper motor and bunch for electrical work. I've probably got an additonal $10,000 into it for $45K total. It has a 3406B/15OD/3.90
Sounds like you would have to put a bunk on that truck....is there room? The worst thing for me might be the 11.1 L engine. I have another truck with 10.9 L M11 Cummins with a 13 double over and a 4.33 rear gear. That little motor needs every bit of that 4.33 and those close ratios in the 13. I would be leery of a 3.xx rear gear behind an 11 L engine. If that truck had a B model cat It's probably 3.70.Last edited: Jun 21, 2015

.....also 460 hp seems like alot of power for a little motor.

Wow! That truck is beautiful though! Thank you all for the positive info. I appreciate all you're guys help! I value you you're guys opinion a lot! The 11.1 Detroit was in cabover that got tore up, but the engine and other parts were still good. Also it has been owned by 3 owners since 89. They are all friends too. So the guy selling it knows all about it. Thank you guys again so much!

Sounds like a lot of work still needs to be done to it. $5K sounds about right. I honestly wouldn't. Be willing to pay any more then that for a parts truck from the way it sounds. 700K on a Detroit is a lot. So it is pretty close to needing rebuilt again.
