Once I turn 21 years old, I plan on getting my CDL and going OTR for 2-3 years to gain experience. I plan on going to a private trucking school to get a good education and basis to learn from. The school I am choosing offers lifetime job placement also, which is a big plus for me. But my question is, once I get my 2-3 years of experience, how hard of a time will I have trying to find a GOOD local job where I am home every night? When I say good, I mean making at least $50k a year; that is enough for me. I plan on getting ALL my endorsement (double, triple, HAZMAT, and passenger) to make myself that much more marketable. I believe that I am a very good worker, I always put my best effort into everything that I do. I am willing to pay my dues in order to land a good career. I DO NOT want to have to be OTR for more than 5 years. I absolutely NEED to have a good local job. So, how hard is it to find local work after you have about 2-5 years OTR experience? (I live in Northeast Ohio btw, about 45 minutes away from Cleveland, and I plan on staying around here.)

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to get my point across. :)
    Thank you!!

Get your cdl at a community college training program, or any non profit outfit. Don't call swift and please, please, don't go to cr England.

Get your endorsements NOW, so you don't have to stop work to walk to a DMV office and deal with the pain in the ##### there.

focus on backing up, log books and compliance. You WILL get pulled in at the scale house, so be sure you're knowledgable on what you need to do.

I would recommend Stevens. Knight. But don't go to swift you will lose your mind there. Good luck, pm me if you need additional info.

Assuming you don't move to Terlingua, TX, you shouldn't have any problems getting a [good paying] local job with 2+ years OTR experience and a desire to work.

Plenty of good paying local jobs in food service or tanker making well over $50K per year.

@STexan- That is good to hear. I definitely have a strong desire to work, I have been working on the dock since I was 16 years old. If I could I would get started tomorrow, but due to the fact that I am only 18 years old I don’t think it’s a wise decision to pay $5k dollars to get my CDL and be struck with not being able to find a job because of my age and insurance policies :(

@Chinatown- That is great news! If you by any chance could let me know the name of companies that are worth looking into, that would be greatly appreciated! I am just trying to get a good knowledge of the industry to be able to make good informed decisions, and I believe the best way to do that is to talk to someone who has been there and experience it like yourself, seeing that you have been a trucker for 30 years. Thank you again, I really appreciate it!

All private schools have some form of job placement. Why wouldn't they? They get a referral bonus for providing bodies to the mega carriers. I asked about working local when I was in school. The admin staff immediately told me that I can't go local and that nobody would hire me unless I go to CRE, Swift, Gordon, or CRST first. Then as our mandatory graduation requirement, we had to fill out three job applications. I told them to hold mine cause I was moving and I would give them my new address at some later point. They never asked about it again after I graduated.

Get your endorsements right away. Save yourself the $10 to reprint your license.

Thanks for the advice. I do plan on getting all of my endorsements right from the get-go. However, the school I am going to has job fairs and some companies that hire from the graduating classes are local. Some of them are even Tanker positions, such as Kenan Advantage Group, which is a company I am very interested in working for once I get my CDL.

Here is a link to the school's employers that select students and sponsors:

I appreciate all of the advice thus far, and would like to hear more if possible!

    Thank you again!

Go to baker college truck driving program. I have heard nothing but good things about them. You will be properly trained and may have an outside shot going local right away. If there is not one nearby try getting into the Conway training program. Good luck wish you nothing but the best

Um, OTR or interstate, taking freight from one state to another, trucking requires you to be 23 yrs of age. But you can drive intrastate, in state trucking, for a construction company or other company that works only in the State you live in. But you shouldn't have a issue finding a local job after 6months-1 year of safe driving experience.
