How do you unhook a lowboy or rgn from the truck (5th wheel)?

I have hauled lowboys but never unhooked from the truck to bobtail. Just wondering what to do! Do you dump suspension, keep going up with the neck until the weight is off the 5th wheel and the unhook?

The only way I have seen it done is by placing blocking a couple feet behind the ramps and then setting the deck on them, lock the neck in place and pull out. If the trailer doesn't have stop locks to keep the neck from slamming to the ground as soon as the truck frame clears then I wouldn't even attempt it. All depends on the trailer manufacture and year. There are many types out there that have to same basic concept but different designs.

Well is it mechanical or hydraulic? If its mechanical and you have ramps just unhook like a regular trailer and ease it down your ramps if your worried about the nose hitting the ground take a chain and tie I back to the main deck and ease out. If its hydraulic I always set the deck on the ground thn pulled out just far enough to see the neck drop a bit and then picked it up by pulling the cylinder down and then you should be good to go if the system has decent seals it will sit there forever.

Does the truck have to be set up different to hook to an RGN?

Im sure someone will correct me quickly if Im wrong but I think the truck has to have RGN ramps to be able to get under the neck when its low

It doesn't 'have to' have ramps (I've known guys who were too cheap to buy ramps), but if youre loaded heavy, it can be really difficult getting back underneath one. And I dont think Ive ever seen anyone get underneath one with the neck extended (if you have a flip neck)down without ramps.

I absolutely love rgn ramps. I will put them on any truck I own regardless of what type trailer.

When you get back to your yard make someone, and I do mean MAKE SOMEONE show you how all the components work. From hooking up to disconnect, Some have a air valve in the rear to use for adjusting height. There is more to them than just driving around a corner. Go ask some questions before hitting the road again!

With a hydraulic neck, no. Mechanical neck, you would REALLY want the ramps.

    Huh?
May I guess you have never even hooked onto a RGN?
That being the case, why reply with this totally incorrect information?

I think he was asking just a simple how to unhook the whole trailer from the truck, not break down the neck from the deck. If this is the case, just pull the 5th wheel pin, dump the suspension and pull out. Of course after unhooking your air lines and electrical lines. The trailer will still be off the ground a few inches but that is why RGN ramps are nice to have, you can slowly and steadily pull out from under it and it will gently set the trailer down.

If your talking about unhooking the neck from the deck of the truck, well like said above, go back to your yard and MAKE MAKE MAKE somebody show you how its done. Pretty easy to break something or bend something if its not done properly.
