My 2 trainers with Prime don't trip plan and basically just hunt for a place to stop when their hours start getting low. I know this isn't ideal since there are areas where you can be 100 miles away from a safe place to stop.

My question is how do you trip plan exactly?

Well I can't answer the question right now but it begs the question - isn't the term "trainer" being used wrong here?

I never planned where I'd stay for my brk or reset.I just started looking for a place an be or so before my hours were done for the day.The main thing is keep track of your hours and plan where you're goi,g to take a brk from that. You'll learn as you go But I would suggest asking your trainer to show you how to trip plan.

The OP just mentioned that his 2 trainers do not trip plan..... bad way to start a career... You should always know where or close to where you will be shutting down...

My trip plan for the load I pick up tomorrow. I don't move the truck if I don't have a trip plan in place. I need a destination. IMG_20170316_114048594.jpg

I agree and isn t it part of a trainers job?Someone with exp it's pretty much routine so they don't need trip planning except the routing part. But new drivers should be taught the correct way.

Combination of my Truck Stop Pocket Guide and Tablet/GPS. I'll pick out an area with truckstops or one of our company yards and enter them into my GPS and watch the ETA time against my log time.

I have pushed it hard sometimes time wise with company yards just because I know I won't be burned looking for parking there, but show up with just 10 to 30 minutes left because I watched my log time against my GPS time and I knew I was okay to make it.
