I just started a great job and it's regional, sometimes I get home Wednesday, but I'm always home on Friday for the weekend. I'm going out Monday with a trainer and he said he doesn't have a converter, fridge, or anything that keeps food cold.
So I'm wondering how to keep lunch meat, and beverages cold enough? I was thinking about maybe putting a small cooler strapped to the catwalk?
How do you keep your food cold otr?

It is a valid question. Yet while you are in their truck you should be more concerned with doing what the trainer says and less about your customization's. Only after you have your own truck will these thoughts be needed. Placing stuff on a catwalk can result in loss during the 34 when you two have both burned off your 70 hours driven. So work on your training. Worry about the other stuff later.

Otherwise I guess you could do worse than getting an icechest (if you don't mind buying a bag of ice every other day). Just keep all your stuff inside waterproof Tupperware containers or Zip-Loc bags otherwise all your food will get waterlogged by the melting ice. -
PB&J, warm water, fruit and snacks is in your future.

bring a small cooler and put snow in it. your trianer must be outdated to not have a cooler or inverter in his truck. Use a small to medium size cooler so it's easy to empty out melted ice.

Its too bad you thought I didnt know what I am talking about. Let me put it this way. You are in his (presuming it is a male trainer) truck as a trainee only. If you dont make the cut you will look awful foolish trying to get a ride home with a refrigerator in tow because you were too anxious to wait till you got your own truck.
Now here is what I dont get. A 12 volt fridge for a truck is about $200. You have money for a fridge but not enough money to buy your own food? Something isnt right there. Oh and those cooler warmers? They will last about two weeks, so I hope you plan to buy them on a regular basis if you do buy one.
When I was on the trainers truck and I ran out of money it only cost a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread to have pb&j sandwiches. The jelly? You can get that for free of sorts when you have a $2 breakfast at a truckstop. 2 eggs and toast. The jelly will be on the table. Yes I am sure alot of other truckers also did this. Heck my trainer showed me when he only had money for tolls.
No I didnt miss the part where you may be in a day cab.Last edited: Oct 31, 2015
