I've spent quite some time on youtube looking at videos of the different ways drivers shift their 13+18 speed transmissions.
I even looked at the (Official Roadranger Videos). I know, "nobody knows more about the transmission than the manufacturer." But those shifting techniques seem very unrealistic. And, in the real world, it seems those videos would cause a driver to take 3 full minutes to eventually reach top gear.
I know both the 13+18 speed can be shifted as a 9 speed, but this question regards splitting the gears.
Some drivers leave the shifter "in gear", flip the splitter, let off the pedal, give it a good half-second, then get back on it.
Other drivers move the shifter in to neautral when they split gears. (Something the official roadranger videos say to NEVER do...)
So, I'm asking the drivers who do it every day. How do YOU shift your 13/18 speed transmission? Is there any danger of hurting the trans the way you shift? Would others agree with you?
Also, could you recommend a video on youtube that YOU feel is the best/safest way to shift a 13/18 speed transmission.
My shifting knowledge ends at being able to "float" a 10-speed E-F trans. I'd like to "study on youtube" the way every other driver shifts a 13/18 speed before I actually drive one...
Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply!
How do YOU float gears on your 13/18 speed trans?

I always float the gears. The only thing a clutch is good for is to stop and start. When spliting the gears I always leave it in gear, let off, wait for it to drop in gear and ease back into the throttle. When down shifting I leave it in gear, split and bring the rpms up easy untill it's in gear, then ease back into the throttle. My 18spd has 1,120,000 and have never done anything to the transmission.
volvodriver01, Blackducati750, SHC and 2 others Thank this. -
Flip the splitter (up or down) only when the mainbox is in a gear.
Smaggs Thanks this. -
Good to know, Thanks very much. 1.1 million miles? Guess you're doing something right.... -
That part I know.... -
I usually leave it in gear and split it. But sometimes I split it then push it in neutral and then back in gear really quick. Works good just have go do it perfect.

It's funny that I sit here and think, how do i shift?lol When u do something so much that u just do it.But on the side splitter i go from low to high then let off the throttle then back on.Downshifting,I slide splitter to low then ease out of throttle and u can feel it take then back on throttle. On a hard pull i can go to neutral and split in the same movement then shifter back in gear, seems quicker and less time loss. Then still going uphill, next shift move slider to high and then float shifter into next lower gear in trans.Seems complicated but after a few days you can tell what works best for different terrain and itwill come natural and you'll stop thinking,ok which gear next. That's what I meant by,it's funny, cause when you've drove a 13 for yrs it catches you off gaurd to try and explain it.Hope this helps some. I only clutch to stop and start.I've never had a trans issue, and replaced 2 clutches over 21 yrs.
gravelhauler, volvodriver01 and Blackducati750 Thank this. -
Thanks. Good to know how many miles/years a driver has been shifting "their own way" with/without problems.volvodriver01 Thanks this.

While we're on the subject, can everyone fill in the blank for me?:
MAKE SURE YOU NEVER EVER (***blank***) WHEN SHIFTING YOUR 13/18 SPEED! YOU'LL BREAK SOMETHING IN THE TRANS!!! -
I run my 13spd as I would a 10spd, I only split the final gear, but I also run very very light so i don't need to split any of the others. And ALWAYS float the gears
