10 years of nothing but tankers and hazmat. About 5 years in the oilfield. Another 5 pulling chemical loads regional. One day, your brain fails you " bigly "... Dropped loaded Trailer on the pad... Loss a $.50/mile job... Thankfully it did not rupture, but demolished the landing gears. Never had an accident before this.
Always thought of myself as a safe driver until that moment... It's been 10 months now.
I work local today , not even getting 40 hrs/wk because the outfit is small. Not happy. I want back on the road. But something is weighing me down. How do you deal with setbacks?
How do you build your self confidence back up again?

Several drivers that have posted on here crashed and rolled a truck. They got back on the road ASAP because that's the best way to overcome something like that.
@TheTrue7 - another Mississippi tanker yanker.Last edited: Feb 26, 2017

Things happen, trust me been there. Get back into it and go. Yes you will be nervous and that's a good thing. I've had a trk flip on it's side years ago. Had it stopped and it layed over.. soft road gave way. Didn't want to drive. Scared.
Well the crew left me at the farm field late at night and only a lded trk was there. Had to get back somehow. Yes I was nervous and had to take same road back where I had my accident. Made it.
In the morning the boss was joking, going well how long did you wait. I said about an hour.. I was hungry tired and needed a shower. I also said thanks
He grinned and walked awayKillingTime, AModelCat, cnsper and 3 others Thank this. -
Most dangerous drivers are prideful and arrogant.
SO Perfect, NEVER makes a mistake,
and they lead in the laughter and finger pointing
when a man drops his trailer or backs into one.
Safest drivers are humble and reverent/respectful.
Realize that they're human and susceptible to error/mistakes.
Sometimes it takes a "big league" mistake/error to humble a man
(not saying that you were not humble from the beginning; just sayin').Last edited: Feb 26, 2017

Experience can be costly at times.

I almost did this not too long ago. Not a loaded trailer fortunately but it still would have damaged the trailer landing gear if I had pulled out from under it and yes more than likely cost me job. It was late and I was tired. Got in too big of a hurry because all I could think about was going to bed. I caught it before I pulled out from under the trailer thank goodness.
That was a wake up call to say the least. It can happen to anyone. Don't be too hard on yourself. I don't know what the answer is to finding a better job. I wish I had one. These tank outfits have gotten pretty dang strict on every little thing. Seems like you can get fired nowadays just for breaking wind.Friend and Just passing by Thank this. -
I high hooked a tanker the other day and I felt like the biggest idiot. As I backed up to the trailer I said to myself it looks alittle high I best get out and check and next thing I know was too late , I had high hooked completely over 5th wheel. I said well heck in fired cause we are suppose to always get out and look before backing up to completely to hook. I remember hearing something bout Useing a coke can from somewhere to get in high hooked. I looked around truck and all I had was Mountain Dew bottles
. I grabbed change hit the drink machine inside terminal bought a coke 12oz can, I wanted to drink it but I wasn't sure if it needed to be full or not. Well I figured out the coke can trick in a few seconds and was good to go. But my coke had freeze on it now so I still messed up bad. Always drink coke can before Useing now I will remember

When you wrecked your 1st bicycle at 5 or 6 years old and skinned your knee *(or broke your pinky-toe like my son did on his 1st dirtbike!)* did you get up and get back on? He sure did....after the cast came off, of course. So many people have had incidents, that actually made them better drivers, yes myself included. PM me for details. Similar.
