How does one go from fresh out of trucking school to Union member?

Is joining a Union, worth it?

Are most drivers part of a Union?

Most drivers are not union members.
Look for union trucking companies, then apply for a driving job.
I worked briefly for a union company and it was a horrible experience.
The drivers backstabbed each other constantly. Constantly calling each other on the phone and complaining about other drivers or management and discussing how they could shaft the company. Drivers constantly filing lawsuits & grievances they never won. I actually felt sorry for management & tried to look at things from their perspective & the best analogy I can think of is, picture yourself as trying to control an adult daycare center where the adults you are caring for all suffer from advanced dementia. Maybe others on this forum can give you more positive information.

I guess the worst part is, it's almost impossible for a company to fire a completely useless, lazy driver. One thing, of many, they will do is call in sick if they have a run they don't want, and they know another better run will be available later. Once the run they didn't want is covered, then they call in saying they aren't sick anymore. Those sorry people are very creative when it comes to backstabbing their fellow drivers.

Yeah I'd have to agree. I've been on both sides of that one both management and employee. It's not just trucking it was just as bad where I came from in aviation. They're the most useless emoyees you could ever have and the worst co-workers you'll ever have the misfortune to work with except for the rare ones that actually care. I'll quit before I join another union. I refuse to be part of the problem. They had their day and did serve a useful purpose at one time in our history. Now it's nothing but politics and money.

OOIDA is the truckers friend; company drivers or 0/0's.

I joined the Teamsters just to get a local job. That was before CDL's. Then you just went down to the union hall and signed the books and they refer you to a job. They have an A book and a B book. Until you have a year with the union you go in the B book. Then when jobs open they go down the A book first, then the B book.

I was classified a warehouseman/truck driver for 4 years before I even drove a real truck. My first driving job was hauling workers around a nuclear plant construction site. Not knowing how to double clutch I slung workers all around the back of the box truck. I could hear them hollering, lol.

That made me quit and go to truck driving school! :)

Do you know if Teamsters are still active in trucking?

Teamsters were branching out into plants and warehouses 30 and more years ago. I used to work at one and after I left to do something else, they got it to vote, they lost.

Right to work state, I won't say there is no reason for unions, but drivers are now mobile enough to find another place to call home , basically vote with their feet.

As CondoCruiser has said here and elsewhere, the unions helped train and place back in the day, but the insurance companies are pretty much running that show now.

Sysco in ca is teamsters. I think us foods is also teamsters in ca but they require a year or 2 experience. Sysco is opening up in moreno valley, try applying as an order selector and maybe you can get in that way. Good luck

If your dead set on being union, try a newspaper.
    YRC,
    US Foods

I joined as a condition of work, the job fit my scheduling needs. Otherwise, I would not likely seek out a Union work site. Too many politics.

Find out what local is in your area. Contact them by phone. With no experience not much to work with. Good Luck.
