i have my IL cdl. i went to a private school. anyways how do people go from IL to like California and go through a 3 week school from their company then get their drivers license upgraded to a CDL? so do they give up their IL license? hows that possible with no California address? because when i go to central refrigerated I will not transfer my IL cdl to a Utah one or wherever terminal I go to
how do people get a CDL when they dont live in that state?

i live in ny, and went to school in indiana. got an indiana cdl, then went home and surrendered that and got ny cdl. i think we used the address of the school as the home address. and regardless of where your home terminal is for the company you go to work for, you will only ever need a cdl for the state where you reside. if you move to another state you will, of course, have to get it changed, but not til then. if you get your cdl training at a school in illinois, and dont move, you should never need anything other than an illinios cdl.

yep that's the way its done.

This is how it's been explained to me, as currently have a MN class D but will be attending school and testing in WI for my class A:
After I take and pass the WI CDL written and road tests, I will surrender my MN license (they clip the corner, etc.) and they will issue me a WI CDL with class A and applicable endorsements. When I return to MN, I will go to the MN DMV and ask them to do a "change of residence" on my WI license, where I pay the applicable transfer fee and they issue me a MN CDL with class A and the endorsements. The reason for all this is that your license should be issued by the state you have your permanent residence in.
Since you mentioned you are from IL, be aware that they have special rules for transferring out-of-state CDLs. I've read elsewhere on this board that there is a 2-year wait period before IL will initiate a transfer. (Since you said you already have an IL CDL, that wouldn't seem to apply to you.) -
it will be useless to go to another state and get a cdl and then go back to Illinois, because in Illinois you will have to have a truck and trailer to retake your road test again to keep your cdl . you can thank former Secretary of State George Ryan and his license for bribes for this

The longer answer: The person must provide proof that the State to which application is made is his/her State of domicile ( State where a person has his/her true, fixed, and permanent home and principal residence and to which he/she has the intention of returning whenever he/she is absent) and provide acceptable proof of domicile. This is the aforementioned lie and support.

When I went to truck school in AR, I had a MO cdl permit. The trucking school used their address to get my AR CDL, then got sent on a run back thru MO to change my CDL back to MO. Illinois is a pain. I lived there for awhile and would never chg my CDL to that state. They required me to do all the permit tests, skills test and road test all over again so I left my CDL in MO and moved back to MO. Lots of truck schools do this

Good info in this thread. I will likewise be bringing my Michigan Enhanced to Wisconsin with My Michigan Permit. It appears that after successful completion of school will receive a Wisconsin CDL A. The word is to bring it back to Michigan and get my Michigan CDL. My intent is to change permanent residency to a warmer climate and wisely one without income tax, i.e. Texas, Florida, or Nevada. Any of them appear good to me. I have been to Nevada a number of times and really like the climate and environment. I spent 3 months at Lackland in Texas...lol and it seems that Texas is a good trucking state. I love Florida, been there many times, just from what I read here on the economy, the local/ltl truckers there don't get paid as much or at least it seems that way. Sold my house this past fall and have been staying at my sisters condo waiting for a better time to relocate. If I'm going OTR...is there any reason to convert the Wisconsin CDL to Michigan or should I just go and make my move now. All i need is a small apartment or even just a room while going OTR...I'm not planning on being "home" a lot nor do I need to. Should I just make my move then or take some time and wait? ty
Chinatown Thanks this.
