I have a new to me 2005 Western Star constellation with a MBE 4000. Is there a way to retrieve fault codes without a reader. I have seen that there is a flashing light system but do not know how or where to activate it. read some where about a diagnostic switch on the dash but I do not have one.
I have a check engine light that comes on after I start to drive and is off the next time I start up and repears as i drive

Also looking for a manual on the DataStar that is in the truck.

    Thanks for any information.

really there is no direct connection with engine ECM and diagnostic datalink. Mercedes engine control differs. All switches, gas pedal, road speed sensor are connected to VCU (in Europe ADM ore FR on MB trucks), and engine ECM is controlled with propreate CAN. So really mounted in cabine VCU got MID128 ID, and it converts Engine fault codes in SAE format. To get direct connection to EECU pin 13 on 16 pin connector is used. It is empty on US trucks and you can connect directly to EECU with Mercedes Star Diagnose tool. Via VCU you can read fault codes with dashboard ore with DDDL software.

I saw WS with Columbia dashboard, but I sugest they may use any Daimler dashboard. Can you post a picture of dash?

But I saw WS with dashboard like in Century Class S/T with control buttond for right hand. Brows menu to get DIAGNOSTIC menu. This dashboard reads active codes only
