I need to check the play of the king pins and have to lift the truck by the front axle, side by side, is 20 ton jack good enough??? The price of a 30ton is almost double to the 20t.

A 10 ten will lift the whole front end without issue so it will be plenty big enough for one side at a time.

Don't forget jack stands. I stack a piling of foot long 4x4s under the front axle - each side - works better on the gravel driveway.

i would use a 20-22 ton bottle jack and some wood 4x4 or 6x6 blocks to raise it. better to go bigger if your ever hooked up to a load and need to do work back there this will come in happy.

Or pull in to a shop and have them lift it for a couple of bucks and check things.

If it's empty, I was able to lift each corner with a 4-ton jack.

You only have to lift 1/2 of whatever your axle weighs.

    Fully loaded, I wouldn't use less than a 10-ton for a tandem.

A 10 ton would work. A legally loaded steer axle doesn't exceed 12,000 lbs. (6 tons). So, a 10 ton jack (20,000 lbs, capacity) should pick up the entire front end without a problem. A 5 ton would pick up an empty front axle.
