81 itself is a easy highway to run on. Just get'er in gear and let'er carry the mail on down the road, you'll be alright.
Flatbedder73 and pattyj Thank this. -
Flatbedder73 you posted a tough mission, i guess it all depends on what you like to drive on --are you the exploratory type and not scared of the "off the beaten track roads" --time wise i can assume it would all be about the same -- but maybe more scenery instead of traffic ? Another factor would be if you are an o/o or company driver (whose fuel you burning? )
Just a little clue that may help some of you out (or not) If you pull out Paper state maps --generally the roads that are visible on there, are drivable in a big truck and some bigger than you would expect.
If used with Google maps and the little yellow man you have it made.
You have to watch in some states like West Virginia --some roads that show up pretty well on Google maps are actually dirt for instance -or close to it.
pattyj from Sioux City Iowa --LOL you are used to those grid type roads -- The side highways are the fun roads.
All kidding aside, the hardest city for me to maneuver in with a big truck was my own --lol what were they thinking!Skydivedavec and Flatbedder73 Thank this. -
its not 81 that's the problem you have to go down 29 now and that road is a pure night mare skinny four land and pulls on it it is a serious pain in the ### I was 80000 and it really sucks I wont ever go on it again
Flatbedder73 and Skydivedavec Thank this. -

I made the mistake of using 68 this morning. I should have done what I been doing for years and avoided it. It was foggy and I quickly remembered why I stay on 70.

I81 isn't a bad ride, the two scales are almost never closed I swear. LOL! Smaller hwys in pa and wv def can be a challenge, like US 50 from VA to WV, I learned the hard way you aren't supposed to go through Winchester. I had to drive wrong sides of the street to make the turns. Also pain when you get to WV and got winding steep hills with curves that make it a pain with a 53 footer, was good experience though.

From Clarksburg WV to Winchester VA on route 50 --not so nice for a big truck.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
How come a truck driver cant answer a simple question ..lol. he asked about interstate 81. to go to danville doesnt mean wv md 68 50 just answer about the road that needs his attention geez. My experience is 29 is the worst road to go south on to va i would stay on 95 to 85 to 360
Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
I've had some really long delays on I81 from accidents. Mostly 2 lane, fairly congested, and thru the mountains/valleys. So when there is a wreck there is a strong potential for a lengthy delay and/or detour. If the weather forecast is bad, I'd stick to 95. And the accident doesn't even half to be in your direction. They'll turn the opposite direction traffic around thru the cop cutouts and merge all that into your direction.
Skydivedavec Thanks this.
