I know most of the states with the highest paid and hottest freight around like CA NC OH IL GA IA TN WV EAST TX and SOUTH NJ. Oh WA and OR too...do you guys know of any other states with hot freight that pays above1.50 pm? I actually just discovered MN and IA to my surprise! Oh and these rates I ask about are net rates not gross. My operating cost is up to1.38 pm...and these are the lanes I run...how about it fellas? Any insider tips for an owner operator?? Thanks!

I'm not an O/O, but I think probably all states have their good spots and bad spots, going in and out of...
Michigan has a different freight market in Detroit than say Grand Rapids or even Lansing, or anywhere north of there, CA has produce freight, import freight, some states have mineral freight like coal, sand, etc in some places, etc. But the way I would look at it is not by state, but by general area, and what kind of freight is being hauled in and out of there.

Also, it depends on how many trucks are in the area looking for loads. There might be one day where Chicago might have 100 trucks but only 50 loads in the area (just an example), and rates would be bad, but then one day like today, when companies have gotten a lot of their drivers home for a long 4th of July weekend, and there are not enough trucks out there, and then load rates go up.

This is all just how I personally would see things if I were an O/O.

If I were an O/O today, I would be running this weekend, and I'd have put myself in an area where I know there is a lot of freight, and I would pretty much try and take my pick of where I wanted to go, and not take less than $3 a mile for it. Am I wrong on this?

I think your rate sounds a little too high in the real world. But I may be wrong.

On this weekend, when a good 90+ % of OTR drivers are at home, there ain't enough trucks to move all the freight, my rate would go up. I think that's reasonable to say that.

In fact, I was speaking with an old dispatcher of mine, who now works for a 3PL, said yesterday they had a very hard time finding trucks in S.C. and PA

Excuse me, but you're not the one who talked to her, I was.
She works for a 3PL in an office that takes care of one customer, and 3 dedicated carriers to haul the shipments for a previously contracted rate. I'm telling you, they had a hard time moving the freight because 95% of the drivers went home.

And besides that, it totally proves my point. If they (a broker) don't want to up the rate, then their freight does sit - and the ones who do offer a good rate will get the freight booked on one of the few remaining trucks out there.

But even then, there are not enough trucks to move all of the freight, all of the time.
