Did some searching and struggling to find what I'm looking for.

I have a 40' flatbed gooseneck with a 5' dovetail.. It has the side rails that I can use chains and ratchet straps, but no built in winches like semi trailers have.. Are you guys just using 2" ratcheting straps like this ( http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Ratch...atchet-Straps/Ratchet-Strap-2x27-w-Flat-Hooks ) or do you add some weld on winches and get the 4" straps to use with those?

I have (15) 4" winches that are on a sliding rail on the drivers side. 1 is on a short (about 1') rail between the axles, 5 are behind the axles and 10 are in front of the axles.

I have seen a lot of trailers with the winches welded on the trailer. My personal preference is to have them on the sliding rail so I can position the winches where I need them for any given load.

    I also carry (6) 20' 3/8" Grade 70 chains and (6) ratcheting binders.

I have about (30) strap protectors that I made from 5" fire supply hose.

I would forget about the 2" straps and go with 4" straps in my personal opinion.

I hope this helps you out. Take care.

Yes, I used the steel rail. I removed the outside board and welded the rail to the underside of the trailer. If you have the equipment and know how to weld its a simple project. All of the trailer shops wanted around $500 to install the winces and rail, so I installed it myself in about 3-4 hours on a day off.

How do you figure out what you need to have in the way of chains/straps? Did yall just buy them as you discovered you needed them? Or what did you start out with?

Take the capacity of what you can haul and multiply it by four. For instance, if your trailer capacity is 3 cars, then you will need four straps per car. Total of 12 straps... I hope I answered the question properly. If not..... Im online so let me know if I can help.
