I saw a wanted ad for a hotshot driver on craigs list a few years back for a position as a company driver. I called, with them the pay was the same as driving truck (CPM) although this outfit put yah up in a motel/hotel everyday.. or so they said. perhaps there are others that pay better.

Most of the time if you drive their equipment you get 25% of what the load pays.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

25% of load pay is low depending on what you call load pay.
I work for an owner operator with a 10 truck fleet leased to a major LTL custom freight company.
We are paid a percentage of the line haul pay. The owner takes 60 percent and the truck earns 40%of the line haul. The 40% to the truck is divided between the drivers of the truck. If you are a team you each earn 20 % of the line haul pay. If you are solo you earn the whole 40% yourself.
The incentive to team is that after all it is expedite freight and you need to be able to drive coast to coast non stop if necessary. If you are solo you are limited to about 650 miles which is really about all you can drive and not break the law.
Line haul pay does not include fuel surcharge or any other monies. -
